We all know Susie Wolff and her amazing work with F1 Academy, but how much do you know about her racing career? 🏎️
Susie caught the motorsport bug from her parents and started karting at eight years old. She was competitive early on, winning several championships at just 14 years old was awarded the title of 'Top Female Kart Driver in the World' in 2000 🏆
A year later Susie graduated to single seaters, racing in the Formula Renault Winter series before making her debut in the full Formula Renault UK Championship. During her third and final season she finished fifth in the standings, taking three podiums and points in 19 of the 20 races 💪
Her career advanced again in 2005 when she moved up to the British Formula 3 Championship, but an ankle injury disrupted her season.
She spent the following years racing in DTM, recording a best finish of 7th, and announced her departure from the series in 2012 when she was named development driver for the Williams Formula One Team 🙌
In 2014, she become the first woman to participate in a Formula One weekend since 1992, driving the Atlassian Williams F1 Team in a free practice session at the British Grand Prix. Sadly engine issues cut her track time short after just one timed lap, but Williams gave her other free practice opportunities over the following year where she showed she could compete with the men.
She announced her retirement from racing the following year, stating she felt she’d gone as far as she could in F1 and wanted to focus on helping other women in motorsport 🏁
"I do believe a woman can compete at that level. I don't think it will happen very soon, but I will definitely make sure I help the next generation.”
Following her retirement she founded Dare to be Different, a non profit aiming to increase female participation in all aspects of motorsport, and in 2020 it merged with the FIA’s Girls on Track platform, creating one global initiative 👏
In 2023, Susie was appointed managing director of the newly launched F1 Academy, taking another step towards her aim of helping the next generation.
Susie dared to be different and continues to inspire others to do the same 💜
