The Birchwood head teacher interview everyone needs to hear. “At times, it was overwhelming,”

When Emma Mills took on the role of Head Teacher at Birchwood Community High School in Warrington back in 2019, she couldn’t have foreseen what lay ahead.

In just a few short years, her leadership would be tested by some of the most challenging times imaginable — from steering staff and students through the Covid pandemic to helping the entire school community navigate the grief and heartbreak following the tragic loss of 16-year-old student Brianna G**y in February 2023.

Joining Phil on the morning show as part of our Meet the Head series, Emma spoke with openness and honesty about those difficult chapters — and about the remarkable strength shown by students, staff, and parents alike.

Latest News Update - Anthony Burns, from Wirral, had been jailed for 10 years at Liverpool Crown Count for the deaths of Ryanair pilots Jamie Fernandes and Matt Greenhalgh, when his HGV ploughed into a taxi carrying Matt and Jamie to Liverpool Airport for their early morning airline shifts in July 2024.

The crash occurred between Burtonwood and Rainhill Stoops on 11th July 2024 on the Westbound carriageway of the M62. Anthony Burns was charged with causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving.

The accident took the lives of two young men who were passionate young pilots and had loving families whose lives will never be the same. Matt had only recently become Captain and married before the accident.

It's brilliant news that Warrington's Owen Cooper from Warrington, best known for his breakout role as Jamie Miller in the Netflix miniseries Adolescence, has won a Golden Globe for his performance. Owen also became the youngest male actor ever to win a Primetime Emmy Award when he took Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Adolescence last year.

He played football as a youngster before taking acting classes at The Drama Mob in Manchester, where tutors quickly rated him as one of their strongest young northern actors.

Adolescence was his first professional screen job, cast after the production approached his drama school looking for an unknown northern teenager for the lead role of Jamie Miller, a 13‑year‑old accused of murder.

His performance drew major critical acclaim, with reviewers describing it as one of the most impressive debuts by a child actor, and it led directly to a string of high‑profile award wins.

Justine Riddoch who performs as Totally Tina, a Tina Turner tribute act, also joins Rob and Magen ahead of her show at Middleton Arena next Friday 16th January. Hear all about the show and what lead Justine to perform as Tina.
