How can design help flatten the “Mid-Week Mountain”? ⛰️
The answer lies in creating workplaces that draw people in - not just mid-week, but every day.
Spaces that balance collaboration with focus, activity with calm, and social energy with comfort are more likely to attract consistent attendance. Features like flexible layouts, good acoustics, personal comfort controls such as adjustable lighting and temperature & sit/stand desks, all help make the office a place people want to be.
But more than ‘pulling people’ back to the office, workspaces that offer flexibility mean than on the days when the office is quieter, and on the days when the office is much busier, space can be utilised in a much more effective way. Instead of a sea of assigned desks sitting empty, create a dynamic environment where space adapts to daily needs.
Personal lockers allow people to choose a spot that suits their task. Modular tables, sofas, and movable screens can transform areas from areas to work in the morning to open seating in the afternoon, allowing all-company meetings or events without the need for designated rooms or areas. A mix of bookable rooms and quiet phone booths gives teams options for focused work, supported by smart booking apps showing live availability.
👉These approaches aren’t about cramming more people in, but about giving teams the control to find the right space easily, ensuring the office feels productive and spacious, even on its busiest days.
The flexible space we designed for our client LMAX is used as intended: not only for day-to-day work, but also for events, panel discussions, and team celebrations. Seeing the space operate to its full potential, seamlessly scaling from everyday activity to high-energy gatherings, shows how thoughtful design can smooth mid-week peaks and elevate overall utilisation.
