Was ignoring Governmemt advice/national alert on Fireworks the correct move for Weymouth Town Council

Apologies to Dorset Council I got that wrong, in my weak defence of the confusion I have to say if it wasn’t for the corruption orchestrated at the time of the amalgamation of various councils I and others wouldn’t get so confused now 🤷‍♂️

I’m not so sure the fact that the fireworks was held on a barge is a good enough argument to be honest seeing as they can and have in the past, shoot off in all directions and have injured people viewing from the beach

I didn’t think this post would get that much attention but now it has and what with some of the comments made, I felt I needed to edit

1) I love fireworks and have done since I was a child. I didn’t have pets then and lived in a big city. I had no idea of the effects of fireworks on wildlife. I am now 63 and have seen the fear in my own pets over the years. Pi***ng themselves out of sheer fright and terror, running around the house trying to find somewhere to hide, but of course no matter where they go the bangs continue. It’s excruciatingly horrible to watch. That’s my own personal take and I don’t condemn anyone for a different view.

2) Tim Munro an ex councillor and mayor thinks it’s ok that Weymouth Town Council grew a pair and ignored the nanny state if the government. What I find wrong with that statement is this; Dorset Council or Weymouth Town Council or both have put up signs all around Weymouth warning of a fire risk. No fires and no BBQ’s (granted no fireworks are mentioned on the sign that neither I or Alex have seen) is what they say. Massive great digital billboards.

Weymouth Town Council and people like Tim Munro have sent a clear message that it’s ok to ignore sound advice that comes in a very expensive national warning/alert to all our mobile phones.

They have basically given the green light for anyone to have fireworks as long as they do so responsibly and we all know that not everyone acts responsibly

This is what the Fire service actually said

“Further to the statements being made about the continuation of the Weymouth fireworks this evening, DWFRS would like to clarify the following:

We do not have authority to make decisions for event organisers. We can only advise.

We were asked for an opinion about the fireworks event, and said in our reply email: "We (DWFRS) cannot advise other than in support of the national alert and would advise that landowners and event organisers take all steps to reduce the risk of wildfires. This includes the use of bbqs, firepits, naked flame (e.g. candles) and fireworks."

BBC Dorset writes

“BCP Council said while the fireworks are set-off from the sea "all it takes is one stray spark to start a fire - that's not a risk we're willing to take in these conditions."
