Some claim they saw something strange, a shadowy figure, drifting along the shoreline just before the salt turned black. One fisherman swears he saw the spirit, bent over the salt in the shadows at Whitby Abbey, blessing it with the spirits magic, its dark, shimmering grains said to possess mysterious, perhaps even supernatural, properties.
As the waves crash and wind howls, the spirit has vanished once more and the enchanted salt will be sold. Will you be the one to possess these mystical grains before the magic fades.

A personal photography project by Olivia Brabbs for her Food Provenance series in collaboration with Whitby Lobster Hatchery, Whitby Sea Salt and Head Chef Paul Gildroy from The Magpie Cafe

Olivia said: I loved the idea of celebrating the thriving lobster and crab fishing industry in Whitby by bringing together 3 passionate businesses who are so key to the profile of Whitby as a food destination. A huge thank you to Archie for supporting the shoot and for all of his hard work setting up the beautiful beach location.

Marine biologist Joe Redfern founded The Whitby Lobster Hatchery to boost the local lobster population by releasing juvenile lobsters into the North Sea. His primary goal was to promote local conservation as lobsters are crucial for the marine eco system however it also has positive impacts for the fishing industry. We started the shoot heading out to sea with the team from the Hatchery to release some of the juvenile lobsters. We sailed on The Sea Salt which is a traditional coble boat restored lovingly by Archie from Whitby Sea Salt.

Archie from Whitby Sea Salt harvests sea water just a mile off the coast over kelp beds to create a mineral rich salt product.

The kelp beds are also a thriving habitat for the marine ecosystem. He uses a slow evaporation technique to ensure optimum nutrients are kept in the salt and a delicious flavour.

Head chef Paul Gildroy from the famous Magpie Cafe cooked up an amazing menu over fire for everyone. The simplicity of stunning local sea food paired with Archie's sea salt made for a delicious feast. The beach BBQ included Whitby Lobster, scallops cooked in their shells, local langoustines and finally crab claws in a salt and chilli dressing. Archie whipped up some margaritas finished with of course tons of sea salt on the glass.

We are immensely grateful and proud to smoke our Whitby Sea Salt & Whitby Proper Vinegar in this iconic place.
It’s all hands on, nothing rushed or forced or automated just skill and experience just the way we do it at Whitby Sea Salt.
Did you know it takes us 4 weeks to produce our handcrafted Whitby Sea Salt crystals then a further 2 weeks at Fortunes.
6 weeks! To bring you a fabulous smoked sea salt that will taste like nothing else anywhere in the country, ‘it’s the flavour of Whitby’!
Don’t forget our Whitby Proper Vinegar too! Proper ‘brewed’ vinegar then 2 weeks at Fortunes for smoking, ‘there’s nothing else like it anywhere, it’s amazing!’

Let’s get that repair done before it’s back!
SeaSalt our traditional wooden fishing Coble built in 1963 using Viking longboat technology needs regular maintenance and repairs as we use it to collect our superb mineral rich sea water off our Whitby Coast often accompanied by Dolphins and other amazing species of wildlife. Then it’s regular maintenance and repairs on our Land Rover to transport the precious cargo to dry using only the wind and the sun just as nature intended retaining all that mineral wealth and taste of the sea. It takes us a minimum 4 weeks to produce our premium Sea Salt crystals, no rushing no force drying, just hands on start to finish working with nature and the weather to produce a superior sustainable environmentally friendly super tasting Sea Salt.
