Just completed these 2 cottages in wheat straw with a scallop patterned block ridge.
The best customers you could ask for, been treated like kings!
… (one giving me the keys to his Golf R 20th Anniversary to look after for 2 weeks! 👀

I have thatched this roof twice & ridged it 3 times since I’ve been thatching. This time they decided for a Traditional flush wrap over ridge which was completed over Christmas.
Every thatcher has their way of finishing them, wether it be blended with the flow of the roof or as I prefer, a crisp straight finish. This roof should now be good for another 10 years before it’s next maintenance schedule!

The completed 270+ft wall that we have recently been thatching. As with most walls, more work was required than originally planned, inc complete strip back to timbers, replacing decayed wood & re-fixing a whole new coat from the bones up.

Just completed this 12th century cottage in Winterbourne Dauntsey. The original under layer of thatch has a soot coating which dates it as in the pre chimney era!!

Ornate signature centre patterned ridges seem to be ‘envogue’ every few decades, with new generations of thatchers attempting whats historically been achieved.
Here’s a mammoth (OTT) centre pattern my dad, Chris Young thatched in the New forest back in 1986 for a customer that obviously had big ideas! I remember helping him with this in the summer holidays at the tender age of 12! ————————
