It was part one of the County Championship’s mid-season return and also marked the halfway stage, in what is shaping up to be one of the most absorbing campaigns in recent times.

A huge shame it is that the red-ball action will once again be put on hold after next week for nearly two months in the heart of summer, before a bumper run-in awaits.

The title race in Division One took its latest twist as Essex emerged at the front of a tightly-bunched pack, whilst promotion contenders continue to jostle for position behind the leaders in Division Two.

Here are some of the key talking points from the latest round of County Championship action. ⤵️

💯 🏆 England opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge struck a fabulous unbeaten 105 not out as England were much too strong for Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on the opening night of the T20 World Cup as a boisterous but chilly crowd of 14,865 enjoyed every minute.

She put on 135 with fellow opener Amy Jones and when the latter was dismissed for a fine 53, skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, who had entered the tournament under something of an injury cloud, clobbered a brutal, unbeaten 46 from 22 deliveries.

Wyatt-Hodge, whose partner gave birth to their first child just under a month ago, celebrated by rocking her bat after bringing up a scintillating century in just 61 balls.

England racked up 219-1, the highest score by any side at a women’s T20 World Cup although the visitors did help the home team by putting down both Jones and Sciver-Brunt in the field.

After her demolition job, Wyatt-Hodge stayed in the game with an excellent take off a skier to get rid of Sri Lanka captain and talisman Chamari Athapaththu for four as Sri Lanka ultimately folded for 132, England’s left-armer Freya Kemp taking 4-21 on debut and all of the bowlers getting a good workout as England look to win the trophy on home soil.

Their next match is on Tuesday against Ireland in Southampton...

🗣️ “Can Ben captain again? I think we’ve just got to let that play out.

“The decision, as I look forward, is about what’s best for the team and what’s best for Ben as well.

“I haven’t got an answer for that at the moment, to be honest. It’s still very raw, certainly for Ben, Brendon (McCullum, head coach), myself, the ECB.

“Ben has been through a range of emotions, as you would do in this situation.

“A lot of people have had phone calls (where) you’re just in disbelief, then you get angry.

“There’s a load of things and I’m still not sure I’m over those at the moment.

“Time is probably the best thing for all of us. Nobody wants to make any rash decisions, whether that’s on Ben’s side or the other end.

“We’ll take the next step when we get to that...

❓ Rob Key said there will be “no rash decisions” as uncertainty continues to cloud Ben Stokes’ future as England captain.

🗣️ “My gaffer is very generous so he gave me a day off to play for the Bob Willis team.

“I also went on a podcast and the funny thing is Broad has been on the receiving end of six sixes whilst Buttler has scored Test centuries for England and they’re talking to a league cricketer from Rugeley in Staffordshire.

“It’s great for our club and town that’s this has happened...

🏏 🏆 Scott Gretton hit a record-breaking 12 sixes in two consecutive overs during a club game for Rugeley Second XI against Springvale CC during a South Staffordshire County League match, thrusting him into the national spotlight.

🏏 At the midway point of the Women’s Vitality Blast League One, the top of the table is tightly packed with only two points separating the top five teams.

The Blaze sit marginally clear at the summit, closely followed by Surrey and Somerset, with Durham and Hampshire just behind them.

They have five wins, their only loss coming in a seven-wicket defeat to Durham.

The Blaze finished second in last year’s group stage before losing a semi-final to Warwickshire but have stated this season strongly and look set for another finals day.

Their top scorer is England’s Tammy Beaumont, who has scored 158 runs at a strike rate of 146, whilst leading their wicket charts is left arm seamer Grace Ballinger who has taken nine wickets in five games at a tidy economy of 5.5 runs per over...

🗣️ “I think the exposure ahead of the World Cup has been awesome.

“It feels like it’s been everywhere and, remembering back to the last time we had a women’s World Cup in England, it’s a completely different era.

“Now it’s on billboards, it’s on adverts, it’s on Waterloo Bridge – the game has changed so much in the last 10 years.

“As a player, and as fans, a home World Cup is something you want to get your teeth into.

“I hope it’s a really strong campaign from England because this kind of build-up brings so much pressure.

“Beyond just England, this feels like the biggest World Cup since Covid, after all of the bio-bubbles and the tournament being moved in 2024, even the ticketing issues at the start of the 50-over World Cup last year...

🗣️ “England have other reasons to be optimistic other than the last-gasp fire from their middle-order.

“They have on paper the far easier group, avoiding all three of Australia, India and South Africa until the semi-finals.

“Of the teams in their group, England have only ever lost a T20 World Cup match to one of them (West Indies).

“Even so, for a side who have never lost a World Cup on home soil, making the final will still be a tough ask.

“England have lost every T20 World Cup knockout match they’ve played since 2018, and should they reach the semi-finals this time, it will be an assessment on whether their pressure demons from the last few years have been overcome...

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🏆 With Alice Capsey firing, Nat Sciver-Brunt back and a favourable route through the tournament, could this be England’s year?
