JO IN THE WATER WORLD CINEMA PREMIERE & "SONG FOR THE SEA" SINGLE RELEASE

Jo in the Water will have a sold-out world cinema premiere on 16th November at Phoenix, followed by a Q&A hosted by Screen Devon's Claire Horrocks with Director Pip Piper, Jo Bateman, Giles Bristow, CEO Surfers Against Sewage and James Wallace CEO Action UK.

And last Friday saw the release of “Song for the Sea”, a track specially written for the film by rising star Benjamin Haycock. Blending acoustic fingerstyle guitar with raw, passionate vocals, the track captures Haycock’s love for the sea and the emotional struggle between its healing power and the frustration over sewage pollution. The song is a resonant piece of protest music calling for environmental justice.

Jo in the Water follows a passionate sea swimmer turned reluctant activist, Exmouth-based Jo Bateman, as she takes on one of the UK’s biggest water companies in a David-and-Goliath battle to protect our waters from devastating sewage pollution. As Jo’s courage helps ignite a growing movement, this film exposes the dire state of our water system and asks: who will stand up for our right to swim in clean natural waters, for the species and communities that rely upon them?

Made in partnership with Surfers Against Sewage and Action UK, with additional support from The Dixon Foundation and Sunray Sportswear, Jo in the Water is a feature-length documentary by award-winning filmmakers with a strong track record of bringing powerful stories to our cinema screens. It is not just about water pollution; it is about connection—to nature, to our own sense of place, and to our responsibility for the world around us.

Featuring Jo Bateman, The Jeremy Vine, Chris Packham and Jim Murray MBE.

“Jo inspires people… they realise that together we have a greater strength. In a shoal like this we become mighty.” Chris Packham, Wildlife TV presenter & conservationist.

The film will be coming to a cinema near you in Spring 2026; sign up to our newsletter to get all latest announcements.

WHEN JO BATEMAN MET SURFERS AGAINST SEWAGE

A couple of months ago we were privileged to witness a meeting between our favourite accidental activist Jo Bateman and one of the original founders of Surfers Against Sewage, the legendary Chris Hines. With SAS marking 35 years of campaigning, it feels like now more than ever we need people like Chris and Jo to be leading the way and setting an amazing example...We all came away more inspired and determined!

We are in the closing stages of making our documentary and want to thank all who have supported us in getting to 76% of our Crowdfunder target; still 35 days left if you feel able to get onboard the campaign!

The Independent Water Commission report is a massive missed opportunity.

Giles Bristow, CEO of Surfers Against Sewage, has described it as “putting lipstick on a pig” and that it “utterly fails to prioritise public benefit over private profit”.
He says: “Only one path forward remains: a full, systemic transformation that ends the ruthless pursuit of profit and puts the public good at the heart of our water services.”

River Action UK says the Independent Water Commission “blinked” when it had a “once-in-a-generation” chance to make major changes. “Instead, we’ve been handed vague policy nudges that leave the current failed privatised water company model intact,” chief executive James Wallace says.

The report merely offers “the illusion of change, not real change.”

We have to keep up the pressure on government to stop tinkering around the edges of the broken water system.

Our film looks at how individual action CAN make a difference.
