LOCKDOWN CHARITY NEWS - During lockdown, St John the Baptist School raised over £7,000 to make PPE visors for the NHS and Care Workers. Over 1,550 visors were made by staff and students for essential front-line workers and delivered to hospitals, care homes, doctors’ surgeries and community nursing teams. Some of the students, governors and parents also took part in 'Sewing for Scrubs' and making protective face masks as well as Key Stage 3 sewing hearts for the NHS and its patients as part of their art home learning. The school also donated science goggles and lab coats to a local hospital.

The students chose to donate the money left over from these fundraising efforts to a local health care charity that is close to our hearts as a community. The photo features Rhona Byrne of Woking and Sam Beare Hospices Wellbeing Care receiving a cheque for £3,000 from Headteacher, James Granville Hamshar, and Charity Prefects, Talha Waseem and Eva Day. The money will pay for 54 hours of nursing care to patients in their own homes by our dedicated team of Community Nurses.

Rhona says: “On behalf of Woking & Sam Beare Hospice and Wellbeing Care thank you for continuing to support us during these challenging and unprecedented times. Please pass on my thanks to all the pupils, parents and teachers who contributed to making the donation happen”. Also featured is Tom Evenden, a Year 9 student, who printed headbands for PPE on his own 3D printer and was a major contributor to the effort.

This is how SJB coped with the lockdown!
*The school stayed open right through this crisis, supporting frontline workers children.
*They used their creativity to make and supply shields and sew PPE for hospitals and care homes.
*Teachers delivered amazing lessons, teaching students remotely and creating online lessons.
*Support staff were able to work remotely from home.
*Everyone involved rose up to the challenge in the manner that is expected of staff and student.
*This is one of the many reasons that SJB has once again been recognised as the Best comprehensive School in Surrey.
