This week's featured venue in The Food & Drink Directory is The Wood Norton, Evesham.

Some hospitality venues succeed because of their food. Others because of their setting. The Wood Norton is one of those rare places where history, location and hospitality combine to create a destination experience.

Perched on the northern edge of the Cotswolds near Evesham, this magnificent Grade II listed country house hotel has a remarkable story, having served as both a royal residence and later a BBC broadcasting centre. Today, its grand architecture, oak-panelled interiors and beautifully maintained grounds provide a fitting backdrop for one of Worcestershire's most distinctive hospitality venues.

Food remains central to the experience. Guests can enjoy seasonal dining in the Fleur de Lys Brasserie, relaxed drinks and Mediterranean-inspired small plates from the Lounge & Terrace Menu curated by Michelin-starred chef Glynn Purnell, or traditional afternoon tea overlooking the formal gardens and Bredon Hills beyond.

Alongside the dining offer, The Wood Norton combines luxury accommodation, elegant event spaces and exceptional service, making it equally suited to celebrations, weekend escapes, weddings or simply a leisurely lunch in beautiful surroundings.

In an increasingly competitive hospitality market, venues that successfully blend heritage, quality food, strong service and a genuine sense of place continue to stand out. The Wood Norton is a fine example of exactly that.

A catch-up with a friend last week provided the perfect excuse to return to JNCTN Worcester and try some of the dishes from the new menu launched in May.

Situated next to Foregate Street Station, JNCTN has become one of Worcester's go-to spots for breakfast, brunch, lunch and coffee, combining a relaxed atmosphere with a menu that continues to evolve. The latest additions include dishes such as the Burrito Bowl, Katsu Pork, Smashed Pea and Beetroot Eggs, alongside a range of returning favourites.

This time, I opted for one of the new hot plate dishes: pea and broad bean smash with poached eggs, lemon and chilli dressing on sourdough. Fresh, vibrant and packed with flavour, it felt perfectly suited to a relaxed lunchtime catch-up. My friend chose the classic Shakshuka Baked Eggs with tomato, garlic yoghurt, crispy chickpeas and toasted focaccia, accompanied by a vanilla latte.

One of the things I particularly like about JNCTN is its versatility. Whether you're meeting friends for brunch, grabbing a coffee before a train journey, enjoying lunch in the secret garden or simply looking for somewhere comfortable to work with good coffee and free Wi-Fi, it seems to cater effortlessly to a wide range of occasions.

Coffee lovers will also appreciate that the beans come from Worcester-based Method Coffee Roasters, whose commitment to quality and traceability aligns perfectly with JNCTN's focus on supporting local suppliers.

If you're planning a visit, it's worth noting their breakfast offer before 10am, where you can enjoy breakfast plus a coffee, tea or juice for just £10 (t&c’s apply).

There's also something exciting on the horizon. On Friday 20th June, JNCTN will be hosting its first evening event, with a menu centred around slow-smoked and barbecued meats inspired by American, Mexican and South American flavours, accompanied by a specially curated drinks menu from Tonic Worcester. Tickets are limited and available here: https://shorturl.at/fxooY

A return visit to Colwall Park Hotel this weekend, this time to experience the Sunday lunch offering following the hotel's recent refurbishment under Spirit Hospitality.

One of the things worth highlighting is that you don't need to be staying at the hotel to dine here. The restaurant, bar and lounge are open to both local residents and visitors, making it an appealing option whether you're exploring the Malvern Hills or simply looking for somewhere special for Sunday lunch.

Available as two courses for £28 or three courses for £35, the menu focuses on seasonal ingredients, local produce and meat from Spirit Hospitality's own St Catherine's Farm near Kempsey.

We started with the prawn cocktail before moving on to roast topside of beef from the farm, served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a generous helping of cheesy cauliflower and leeks. To finish, we opted for the sticky toffee pudding, which provided a suitably indulgent end to the meal.

The refurbishment itself has transformed the feel of the hotel while carefully respecting its 120-year history. The refreshed bar, lounge and reception areas feel lighter, warmer and more contemporary, while retaining plenty of character. One of the standout additions is The Artist's Studio, a beautiful new private dining room inspired by Dame Laura Knight, who had her studio on this very site between 1947 and 1961.

What stands out most, however, is the emphasis on provenance. The use of produce from St Catherine's Farm gives the menus a genuine connection to the surrounding area and reflects a growing focus on local sourcing across the wider Spirit Hospitality collection.

For those looking for a relaxed Sunday lunch in an attractive setting beneath the Malvern Hills, Colwall Park is certainly worth considering.

This week’s featured venue in The Food & Drink Directory is Rizzo Wine Club and Rizzo Italian Deli - Worcester.

Worcester’s independent food and drink scene continues to evolve, and one of its most interesting recent additions is a business built around something often overlooked in hospitality: education, storytelling and genuine passion for the product.

Founded by Gianluca Austin-Rizzo, whose journey began among the vineyards and olive groves of Puglia before progressing through Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy and the UK, Rizzo Wine Club was created to make quality Italian wine more accessible, approachable and enjoyable.

What started as intimate wine dinners has grown into a thriving community of wine lovers, with regular tastings, curated wine flights, producer events and carefully paired dining experiences that encourage guests to explore the diversity of Italy’s wine regions.

At the heart of the operation is the Rizzo Wine Club Tasting Room, where small-group tastings focus as much on the stories behind the wines as the wines themselves. It's an approach that removes much of the intimidation often associated with wine and replaces it with conversation, discovery and hospitality.

More recently, the business has expanded with the opening of Rizzo Deli in Worcester city centre. Bringing together artisan Italian produce alongside carefully selected local suppliers, the deli extends the experience beyond the tasting room and creates a destination for those looking to discover quality ingredients, wines and authentic flavours.

At a time when consumers increasingly value provenance, expertise and personal connection, Rizzo Wine Club & Deli offers something that feels both distinctive and genuinely rooted in its founder’s heritage.
