The shocking revelations from the Undercover Policing Inquiry confirm what many of our communities have long known. Asian and Black families seeking justice have been disproportionately targeted, surveilled and treated differently by Police forces.

Campaigns rooted in grief and accountability were too often demonised rather than supported.

The experience of the Reel family is one of the most painful examples. Instead of receiving compassion after the suspected racist murder of 20 year old student Lakhwinder Singh (Ricky) Reel, they were monitored by spy cops while fighting simply to be heard. This violation was not only unjustified, it was an abuse of power that deepened their trauma.

The Sikh Network, the Sikh Federation (UK) and the APPG for British Sikhs jointly recognised Ricky’s mother Sukhdev Reel courage by awarding her a Recognition Award for Contribution to Human Rights in Parliament a few years ago. Her tireless fight for justice has helped shine a light on institutional failings and contributed to reforms within the Met Police.

🎙️ Listen to The Sikh Network Podcast episode 9 featuring Sukhdev Reel and John McDonnell MP, where they speak openly about their decades-long struggle for truth, accountability and dignity in Ricky’s name.

Their story is not just about one family, it is about the systemic injustices faced by many Black and Asian communities. We stand with all families who continue to seek justice and demanding transparency, reform and accountability.

Today, we remember and honour Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji on his Shaheedi Divas (Martyrdom day)

The Ninth Sikh Guru sacrificed his life to protect freedom, faith, and human rights for all. His courage, compassion, and unwavering stand against tyranny is unparalleled in history, and continues to inspire us every day.

May we follow his teachings of seva, humility, and justice, and keep his spirit alive in our hearts and actions.

Honouring Excellence: The 2025 Gurpurab Community Awards

POSTHUMOUS RECOGNISED LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
We were immensely proud to honour a great giant whose courage and moral conviction continue to inspire millions around the world.

A humble community leader from Amritsar, Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra became a voice for the voiceless during one of Punjab’s darkest periods.

Through meticulous research and immense personal risk, they uncovered evidence of thousands of unlawful killings and secret cremations, bringing international attention to the grave human rights abuses committed in the 1980s and 1990s.

For speaking truth to power, Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra paid the ultimate price, abducted, tortured, and killed for their work in 1995.

Yet their voice was never silenced.
Their courage sparked a global movement for justice and human rights that continues to this day.

As we mark the 30th anniversary of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra’s martyrdom, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for British Sikhs proudly presented a Posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award to Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, in recognition of their extraordinary bravery, their commitment to justice, and their enduring contribution to the Sikh and global human rights legacy.

Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra’s life reminds us all that truth cannot be buried, and that the defence of human dignity and rights is the highest form of service.

His leadership was particularly evident during the recent devastating Punjab floods, where he played a frontline role in supporting affected farmers and coordinating relief efforts with global NGOs.

Through his advocacy, youth leadership, and commitment to service, Paramjit Singh Mand has made a lasting impact on both local and international Sikh communities.

This award celebrates his dedication, vision, and tireless efforts to uplift and unite Sikhs worldwide.
