It has been a home for people with serious disabilities for nearly 40 years.

One that is all about facilitating life, encompassing a philosophy that concentrates on what people can do, not what they can’t.

The Guernsey Cheshire Home sits on the Rohais, but Shorncliffe, for all the good memories it holds, is tired, and now the charity is planning for a new future.

The Home receives no public grant, it relies on fundraising, legacy donations and through payments of long term care allowance to cover running costs of about £1.6m a year.

It has appealed to landowners to let them know if they have a site that could become a purpose-built facility, one that could also help it evolve to meet the future needs of the island, including the possibility of providing step down care for those ready to leave hospital, but not quite ready to look after themselves.

This is Les Fouaillages at sunset on the Winter solstice. It connects us back some 7,000 years with our ancestors.

This week's episode of Dig This is all about Les Fouaillages, renewed efforts to finally publish and interpret the full results of work that happened 50 years ago, new evidence being uncovered, and how these efforts combine to give the site the prominence it deserves.

Why this monument was built, how it was used, what it meant, how society was moving from hunting and fishing to farming, communicating, moving - the answers to those questions are probably here if we know where and how to look. Equally, part of the beauty of the site is what we will never know.

In December 2023 GBG Insurance failed with a reported $74m. hole in its books. The impact rippled globally, from people receiving emergency care left unsure whether it would continue through to hundreds of staff left without jobs. Now two major civil court actions are underway. This is the story so far... link in comments.

How would you fill a £98m. gap in Guernsey's finances?

Our deficit calculator has all the options under consideration - a GST, changing corporate tax, savings or changing what you spend on infrastructure. You can see how much of an impact each one has alone or in combination and what is left in the pot for the long list of infrastructure projects.

Seeing the numbers in this form is illuminating. Link in comments below.

Tokenisation, blockchain, stablecoin, the impact of AI - no one has all the answers, but Guernsey has groundwork in place to embrace the opportunities as attitudes shift.
There's recognition that our finance industry needs to adapt, those who are complacent will be out-competed if not, but face the well known dilemma and difficulty of any legacy player of if, when and how fast to move and, indeed, whether they have the capability and capacity to do so.
It's a fascinating time as we see those with tech backgrounds making moves and disrupting traditional spaces (there's a mirror here with the media world).
I spoke to Guernsey Financial Services Commission Director General William Mason about its digital finance initiative for the latest episode of The Quarry's Dig This podcast, it was a fascinating insight and glimpse into the future.
