🌵 DESERT DIARIES
JOURNAL ENTRY 29 — THE RETURN
Finding God When Life Feels Dry
“You don't return to the desert because you belong there. You return because somebody still needs the wisdom you found there.”
Yesterday, you told The Testimony.
You looked back and realized that what you thought was wasted had become a story of God's faithfulness.
But there is one more thing that often happens after God brings us through something.
He sends us back.
Not to live there.
Not to become prisoners of the past again.
Not to reopen wounds that God has healed.
But to reach people who are still walking through what you once walked through.
Welcome to Journal Entry 29.
🔄 SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO GO BACK
Imagine a person who finally finds water in the desert.
They drink.
They recover.
They find the road out.
Then they turn around.
Someone asks: “Why are you going back?”
And they answer: “Because there are still people there.”
That's the picture of today's entry.
God didn't bring you through your desert merely so you could say: “I'm glad that's over.”
Sometimes He brings you through so that one day you can say: “I know the way out. Come with me.”
📖 JESUS TOLD PETER TO RETURN
One of the clearest examples is Peter. Peter failed Jesus.
He denied Him.
He wept.
He carried the weight of that failure. But after the resurrection, Jesus restored Peter and then Jesus gave him an assignment.
John 21:15–17 records Jesus repeatedly asking Peter: “Lovest thou me?”
And after Peter responded, Jesus said: “Feed my sheep.”
Think about that. Jesus didn't merely restore Peter's relationship. He restored his assignment. Peter's failure didn't disqualify him from future usefulness.
🏜️ YOU CAN GO BACK WITHOUT GOING BACKWARD
This distinction matters. Going back doesn't mean returning to the old identity.
✓ It doesn't mean reopening every old relationship.
✓ It doesn't mean returning to unhealthy environments.
✓ It doesn't mean repeating the same mistakes.
You can revisit a place without becoming the person you were there.
You can return with wisdom.
You can return with boundaries.
You can return with compassion.
You can return with a testimony.
You can return with a different perspective.
🕊️ MOSES WENT BACK
Moses spent years away from Egypt. Then God appeared to him and said:
“Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.” — Exodus 3:10
Consider it. Egypt was part of Moses' painful history yet God sent him back. The place that once represented something painful became part of his assignment.
Sometimes God doesn't erase the chapter. He redeems it.
🔥 YOUR PAIN CAN BECOME A BRIDGE
✓ Maybe you've experienced ministry disappointment.
✓ Maybe you've experienced rejection.
✓ Maybe you have gone through a season where you questioned your calling.
✓ Maybe you had to rebuild your confidence.
✓ Maybe you had to learn how to trust God again.
And now someone else is standing where you once stood. They don't need someone who merely says: “Have faith.”
They may need someone who can say: “I understand.” Not because you've lived their exact story. But because you've walked through your own desert.
❤️ COMPASSION IS ONE OF THE HARVESTS
Hebrews 4:15 tells us that Jesus is touched with: “the feeling of our infirmities...”
There is something powerful about understanding human weakness. Your desert can make you more compassionate before, you may have judged people quickly. Now you pause.
Before, you may have said: “Why don't they just move on?” Now you understand that healing takes time.
Before, you may have criticized someone who was struggling. Now you know what it feels like to struggle privately.
Pain can either make you bitter or make you compassionate. Choose compassion.
⚠️ BUT DON'T RETURN WITHOUT WISDOM
This is extremely important.
Not every place God delivered you from is a place He wants you to return to physically.
Sometimes the return is symbolic.
You return through:
your testimony,
your teaching,
your book,
your ministry,
your mentoring,
your encouragement,
your example.
You don't have to physically return to an unhealthy environment to help someone who is still there.
Wisdom knows the difference between assignment and attachment.
🧭 YOU ARE NOT THE RESCUER
There's another lesson here.
When you return to help others, don't begin believing: “I have to save everybody.”
You can't.
Only God saves.
Only God heals.
Only God transforms.
Your responsibility is obedience.
Paul said: “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” — 1 Corinthians 3:6
You plant.
You water.
God gives the increase.
That should free you.
🏗️ THE BUILDER RETURNS TO THE SITE
Think about a construction project.
A builder may finish one stage and move on.
Later, he returns to inspect the work.
He doesn't return because he failed.
He returns because he has something to contribute.
Your past can become like that.
You can look back and say:
“I remember that foundation.”
“I remember that mistake.”
“I remember what I learned here.”
And now you can build differently.

💼 THE BUSINESS & PURPOSE LESSON
Your previous struggles may eventually become part of your expertise.
If you once struggled to build a business...
you may eventually teach someone how to avoid those mistakes.
If you struggled with leadership...
you may become a better leader because of what you learned.
If you struggled with ministry structure...
you may develop systems that help others.
If you struggled with writing...
you may eventually help another writer.
Experience becomes valuable when you convert it into wisdom.

🌱 DON'T WASTE YOUR RECOVERY
This may be one of the strongest questions in today's entry:
What will you do with what you survived?
If God restored you...
who will you encourage?
If God taught you...
who will you teach?
If God strengthened you...
who will you strengthen?
If God comforted you...
who will you comfort?
2 Corinthians 1:4 says God comforts us:
> “that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble...”
Your recovery can become somebody else's roadmap.
---
🗣️ YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS
When you return, don't pretend you're an expert on everything.
You can simply say:
“This is what I learned.”
“This is what helped me.”
“This is where I made a mistake.”
“This is what God taught me.”
“This is how I kept walking.”
That's enough.
You don't have to be perfect to be useful.
---
🏜️ GO BACK WITH WATER
There's a beautiful picture here.
The person who left the desert thirsty returns carrying water.
That's what your testimony should become.
You were once desperate for encouragement.
Now you can encourage.
You once needed someone to listen.
Now you can listen.
You once needed direction.
Now you can share what you learned.
Don't return carrying the dust.
Return carrying the water.

👣 TODAY'S LIFE CHALLENGE
Write down three questions:
1. WHAT DID GOD BRING ME THROUGH?
Be honest.
2. WHAT DID I LEARN?
Write the lessons.
3. WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM WHAT I LEARNED?
Think of one person.
One young minister.
One business owner.
One friend.
One struggling believer.
One person who feels rejected.
One person who is waiting.
Then ask God:
“How can I become a blessing to this person?”
