A WICKED SUMMER RETURN

SCENE 1 — THE RETURN

The scene opens with a woman walking into the compound carrying a small bag. She looks tired but determined. A person who once helped her, MAMA GRACE, sees her from a distance.

MAMA GRACE:
So… you finally came back.

WOMAN:
Yes. I came back because I have nowhere else to go.

MAMA GRACE:
Nowhere else to go? After everything I did for you?

WOMAN:
I have never forgotten what you did for me. You helped me when nobody wanted to help me.

MAMA GRACE:
And you think that gives you the right to come back here and behave as if nothing happened?

WOMAN:
I don’t understand. What have I done to you?

Mama Grace steps closer, her expression suddenly becoming cold.

MAMA GRACE:
You still don’t understand? I helped you because I thought you would remain grateful. But now you have everything I wanted.

WOMAN:
Everything you wanted?

MAMA GRACE:
Yes. The respect. The money. The people around you. Even the man I thought would belong to me.

WOMAN:
Mama Grace, I never took anything from you.

MAMA GRACE:
Maybe you didn’t take it… but you will pay for it.

The woman looks shocked.

WOMAN:
After all the years we’ve known each other, you would really do this to me?

MAMA GRACE:
You haven’t seen anything yet.

Mama Grace walks away slowly. The woman remains standing, confused and frightened.

WOMAN:
I thought the person who helped me was my greatest blessing…
I never knew she would become my greatest enemy.
