PARLIAMENT APPROVES MAHAMA AYARIGA AS LOCAL GOVERNMENT MINISTER

Parliament, on Thursday, 27 August 2026, approved the nomination of Hon. Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

The approval followed his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee earlier in the day, where he was vetted on his competence, experience and suitability for the ministerial portfolio.

Following the vetting, the Appointments Committee recommended his approval, paving the way for the House to consider and subsequently approve his nomination.

The parliamentary approval completes a key constitutional requirement in the process towards Hon. Ayariga’s appointment, following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama on 7 August 2026.

Hon. Ayariga now awaits his formal swearing-in by the President to assume responsibility as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

George Kwaku writes ✍️

RETRACTION AND APOLOGY

I wish to retract and sincerely apologize for a Facebook post I previously made concerning Mrs. Irene Amankwaa Karikari, wife of GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi, in which I alleged that she was on the GoldBod payroll and receiving thousands of Ghana cedis every month without performing any work.

Having reflected on the matter, I acknowledge that I did not have sufficient verified evidence to make such a serious allegation as a fact. I therefore unreservedly withdraw the allegation and apologize to Mrs. Irene Amankwaa Karikari, her family, and anyone who may have been affected by the publication.

I take responsibility for the post and regret any embarrassment, reputational harm, or distress it may have caused.

This retraction is made sincerely and without reservation. I am sorry, and I sincerely apologize.

Upper East Region: Mother and Newborn Baby Die After Falling into Collapsed Bugri Bridge

A mother and her newborn baby have reportedly died after falling into the collapsed Bugri Bridge in the Tempane Constituency of the Upper East Region.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to the media, the deceased, a mother of two, was returning from her father’s residence to her husband’s home at Bugri Bugpiig after spending several days with her family following childbirth.

She was reportedly riding a motorbike with her two children when she approached the collapsed section of the bridge. She allegedly failed to stop in time and fell into the water with the children.

The mother and her newborn baby tragically drowned, while rescue teams managed to retrieve her elder son alive. He was subsequently rushed to a nearby health facility for medical attention.

The incident is the latest in a series of accidents linked to the collapsed bridge.

Earlier this month, a young boy from Asigir reportedly died while returning home after using the road from Bugri.

In another incident, a young man from Gabgiri reportedly fell into the same collapsed section of the bridge when the motor king he was riding overturned.

The repeated incidents have heightened concerns over the safety of residents who continue to rely on the road despite the dangerous condition of the bridge.

The people of Bugri and surrounding communities are therefore appealing to the relevant authorities to urgently intervene and restore the bridge to prevent further loss of lives.

The deceased woman’s elder sister has blamed duty bearers for the continued deterioration of the bridge and appealed to them to take immediate steps to fix it.

She said the recurring accidents demonstrate the urgent need for a permanent solution to the problem and called for immediate action to protect residents who depend on the road.
