Abidjan Collapse (Ghana 2-2 Mozambique)
βTwo years ago today, Ghana Black stars faced Mozambique in our final group-stage match of AFCON 2023 (held in 2024) in Ivory Coast. This match is now etched in history as one of the Black Stars' most painful exits.
β Ghana needed a win to progress to the knockout stages.
βThe Match: The Black Stars were comfortably leading 2-0 deep into stoppage time thanks to two penalties from Jordan Ayew.
In a shocking turn of events, Black stars conceded twice in just six minutes of added time, Andrea Ayew came on and decide to cause a penalty in the additional time (90+1 ) for the Mozambique to scored their first goal which many people believe that is the reason why coach Atto Addo sacked him from the Black Stars. Richard ofori also touched a harmless ball that was going out, which resulted in the corner that Mozambique used to punish us, making it 2-2 in ( 90+4)
The 2-2 draw resulted in Ghana's second consecutive group-stage exit from AFCON. It led to the immediate dismissal of head coach Chris Hughton and sparked massive protests from fans and sports journalists in Ghana (the "Save Ghana Football" demonstration).
