Protests erupt across Cameroon as supporters demand recognition of Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s victory

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital, on Sunday, responding to a nationwide call from opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary. Demonstrators—mostly young people—marched through major thoroughfares, demanding that authorities acknowledge Tchiroma’s victory in the recent election and disclose the true results of the vote, expected to be officially announced on Monday.

The Minority in Parliament has raised red flags over what it describes as an attempt by the government to criminalise free speech through a proposed piece of legislation.

Addressing the media on Sunday, October 26, the former Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said a draft bill currently being circulated seeks to make it an offence for individuals to post or share messages in online chat groups that could be deemed offensive or inciteful.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has joined the public debate on whether it was time for senior high schools (SHS) to allow students to wear long hair on campus, especially if it was a natural hair.

But speaking at the Mawuli Senior High School's 75th anniversary in the Volta Region on Saturday, October 25, the sector minister said the education authorities were not going to tolerate any long hair "today or tomorrow" and added the secondary school environment was not a place for a beauty contest."

The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has expressed concern over the declining use of condoms among young people, attributing the trend to a reduced fear of HIV and AIDS infections.

Mr Isaiah Doe Kwao, Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Commission, said that although condoms remained widely available, many young people were becoming complacent about their s*xual health, opting for unprotected s*x despite the risks.
