Mother and Son Among Three Killed in Tragic Accra–Kumasi Highway Cras

A tragic head-on collision on the Accra–Kumasi Highway has claimed three lives — including a mother and her son — leaving several others critically injured.

The fatal crash occurred near the Rider Iron and Steel Company at Odumasi Ohene Nkwanta around midday on Sunday, sparking renewed calls for stricter enforcement against reckless driving on Ghana’s major highways.

According to police reports, the accident happened when the driver of a BMW saloon car (GE 4700-20), heading from Kumasi to Accra, attempted a wrongful overtaking, colliding head-on with an oncoming Toyota Yaris (AS 3861-24).

The impact was devastating — the Toyota driver and a passenger died instantly, while a female passenger, later identified as the mother of the young boy, succumbed to her injuries at the Hope Care Hospital in Odumasi.

Emergency services and police quickly arrived at the scene, which was cordoned off for investigation. Injured passengers from the BMW were transported to nearby medical facilities, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Konongo Government Hospital morgue.

Authorities have confirmed that wrongful overtaking remains a leading cause of fatal road accidents in Ghana, contributing to nearly 35% of deaths on the country’s highways annually.

Police have launched a full investigation into the incident and are considering manslaughter charges against the driver of the BMW.

The Accra–Kumasi Highway, a 245-kilometre corridor linking the south to the middle belt, continues to be one of Ghana’s most accident-prone routes, prompting growing public concern over road safety and driver discipline.
