The Ghana Revenue Authority has confirmed that new fuel levies under the revised Energy Sector Levies Act, 2025 (Act 1141) will take effect starting Monday, June 9, 2025, triggering significant increases in the cost of key petroleum products.

Here are the key updates:

▪️ Revised Levies on Petroleum Products:

Super Petrol: from GH¢0.95 → GH¢1.95

Diesel/AGO & Marine Gas Oil (Foreign): from GH¢0.93 → GH¢1.93

Marine Gas Oil (Local): from GH¢0.03 → GH¢0.23

Heavy Fuel Oil (RFO): from GH¢0.04 → GH¢0.24

Partially Refined Oil (Naphtha): from GH¢0.95 → GH¢1.95

LPG remains unchanged at GH¢0.73

▪️ Purpose of the Levy: To raise revenue for energy sector shortfalls, reduce legacy debts, and stabilise Ghana’s power supply.

▪️ Transitional Arrangements:

Products lifted before June 9 will attract old rates.

“Cash-and-carry” products lifted from June 1 onwards fall under the new levy.

▪️ Criticism from Civil Society:
IMANI-Africa’s Kofi Bentil has slammed the move, describing it as a poor attempt to mask deep-rooted corruption and mismanagement in the energy sector.

“The problem in our energy sector is not a lack of money, but a surplus of incompetence and corruption,” Bentil remarked.

The GRA has urged strict compliance across all ports, marketing companies, and fuel stations nationwide.

Government has intensified efforts in the fight against illegal mining, recording over 500 arrests in just five months, while preparing to reclaim thousands of hectares of degraded land across the country.

Key highlights from the anti-galamsey update:

▪️ 500+ Arrests Recorded: Authorities have arrested more than 500 individuals involved in illegal mining operations since the beginning of the year.
▪️ Land Restoration Initiative: A large-scale project to reclaim 10,000 hectares of destroyed lands is set to be launched in collaboration with the private sector.
▪️ Low Conviction Rate: Between 2022 and 2024, out of 845 arrests, only 35 (4%) resulted in prosecution—raising concerns over the justice system's role in fighting galamsey.
▪️ Political Interference Exposed: Sector Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah cited politically connected individuals receiving licenses without proper due diligence, undermining regulatory processes.
▪️ Presidential Commitment: President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed government’s resolve to shift from competition to collaboration in reclaiming lands and strengthening mining regulation.

The government is urging stakeholders to unite in reversing the devastating impact of illegal mining on the country’s environment and rural livelihoods.

The Minority in Parliament is raising serious concerns over delays by the Ministry of Finance in releasing funds meant for the effective functioning of Parliament. The lack of resources, they argue, is paralyzing committee activities and undermining oversight responsibilities.

Key highlights from the parliamentary debate:

▪️ Funding Delays Crippling Work: Chairman of the Assurances Committee, Dominic Nitiwul, revealed that committees are unable to perform basic functions, including holding workshops, due to zero disbursements from the Finance Ministry.
▪️ Call for Immediate Action: Nitiwul urged Parliament to demand accountability from the Finance Minister, stressing that “Parliament is now literally begging for money.”
▪️ Majority Pushes Back: Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor countered the claims, insisting that Parliament has received its funds and that MPs' salaries and allowances are intact.
▪️ Committee Chairs Frustrated: Multiple committee heads have reportedly voiced their frustration behind closed doors over the inability to carry out their duties.
▪️ Concern for Democratic Oversight: The delay threatens Parliament’s ability to conduct proper checks and balances, especially at a time when government accountability is critical.

The issue remains a growing concern as Parliament struggles to maintain its functions without financial backing.
