From Power to Respect: Obasanjo Bows Before Former Governor He Once Removed

In a poignant turn of events, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently paid a visit to Chief Rasheed Ladoja, the man he once oversaw out of office, and bowed in respect, offering a compelling reminder of the impermanence of power.

Years ago, during his presidency, Obasanjo exercised the full weight of his authority to enforce the impeachment of then-Governor Rasheed Ladoja of Oyo State. At the time, the move solidified Obasanjo’s dominance in Nigerian politics.

Today, however, the dynamics have shifted. Chief Ladoja stands as the Olubadan of Ibadan in-waiting, a revered traditional position representing one of the most respected royal stools in Yoruba land. In a remarkable display of cultural protocol and humility, Obasanjo bowed before Ladoja, a symbolic gesture that speaks volumes about time, power, and fate.

This moment serves as a powerful reflection: power is never permanent. It is lent, not owned. Authority is a passing role, not an eternal status.

PRESIDENT MAHAMA GRANTS AMNESTY TO 998 INMATES IN BOLD MOVE FOR JUSTICE AND COMPASSION.

In a significant act of executive clemency, President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners across the country, marking one of the largest mass releases in recent years aimed at easing prison congestion and promoting humane justice.

The amnesty was granted in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the President to exercise the prerogative of mercy, in consultation with the Council of State and upon recommendations from the Prisons Service Council. Out of 1,014 inmates reviewed, 998 were approved to benefit from the clemency.

The released inmates fall into various humanitarian and legal categories. A total of 787 were first-time offenders, while 87 inmates on death row had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Another 51 inmates serving life sentences had their terms reduced to 20 years. Additionally, 33 seriously ill inmates, 36 elderly prisoners aged 70 and above, and two nursing mothers were released. Two other individuals were granted amnesty under special petition cases. This move has been welcomed by several human rights and civil society organizations, including the Universal Friendship Organisation (UFO), which praised the Presidents decision as a compassionate and progressive step. The group called on the general public to support the reintegration of released prisoners into society, urging communities to receive them with dignity and empathy.

President Mahamas action highlights an ongoing commitment to prison reform and restorative justice, recognizing that effective rehabilitation is a key part of national development. By focusing on vulnerable groups and first-time offenders, the clemency also underscores the importance of second chances and the value of human dignity, even within the criminal justice system.

The amnesty not only offers hope to hundreds of inmates and their families but also serves as a broader signal of the administrations intent to improve conditions within Ghanas prisons and promote a justice system that balances accountability with mercy.
