Zuarungu SHS Shut Down Indefinitely After Ethnic Clashes

Zuarungu Senior High School in the Upper East Region has been closed indefinitely following violent clashes between students from the Gurune and Kusasi ethnic groups.

The unrest, which broke out on Sunday, July 20, was triggered by a dispute over a stolen mobile phone and escalated into a full-scale brawl, leading to the destruction of school property, including some burnt facilities.

Four students have been linked to the incident—three are in police custody, while one is on the run, reportedly in possession of a police firearm magazine.

Regional Minister Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga ordered the closure to ensure safety as investigations and security operations continue.

Minister Demands 30% DSTV Price Cut Over Cedi Gains

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has urged Multichoice Ghana to reduce DSTV subscription prices by 30%, citing the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi and rising consumer dissatisfaction.

Speaking at a meeting with a DSTV delegation led by Dr. Keabetswe Modimoeng, the Minister emphasized that despite a 30% improvement in the cedi’s value over five months, subscription rates remain unchanged.

He stressed that Ghanaians prefer a direct price cut over temporary promotions and criticized the platform’s content as outdated, aside from Premier League coverage. Multichoice has until July 21 to respond with a concrete proposal.
