Nobody tells you this when you start job hunting remotely 👇

But here's what's actually happening.

Remote job hunting is a volume game — but only if you're applying to the right companies. Most people spend months applying to companies that were never going to hire from their country in the first place.

The companies that genuinely hire from Africa are a specific group. They already have team members in Lagos, Accra, Nairobi. Their job descriptions say worldwide and they mean it. Their hiring process doesn't ask you to have a US bank account before the first interview.

Finding those companies is the work. Not the application itself.

I want to say something that might be uncomfortable

Most African professionals who are "waiting until they're ready" to apply for remote jobs — are already ready.

They're waiting for a feeling that's never going to come.

Because nobody feels ready. Not the person who just got hired at Automattic. Not the one who landed the Wave role. Not the one who got the offer from Canonical last week.

They applied anyway. While still feeling like it was a long shot. While still wondering if their location would count against them.

The gap between where you are and where you want to be is almost never about qualifications.

It's about the application you keep talking yourself out of sending.

Something I've noticed after months of curating remote jobs 👇

The companies that actually hire from Africa don't announce it loudly.

They just... do it.

No "we welcome African applicants" banner. No diversity press release.

They have team members in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya already — and when a new role opens, they post it the same way they always do. Worldwide. No restrictions.

That's the quiet signal most people miss.

Before you apply anywhere — go to their team page. Go to their LinkedIn. Look at where their people actually are.

If you see someone from Lagos, Accra, or Nairobi already on that team — apply with full confidence. The door is already open.

If you don't see anyone from Africa anywhere on that team — that doesn't mean no. But it means do your research first.

I looked at someone's CV this week and honestly it broke my heart a little 😭

This person had 6 years of experience. Had worked across three different countries. Had managed teams, handled budgets, dealt with difficult clients — the full package.

But their CV read like a grocery list.

"Managed staff." "Handled customer complaints." "Assisted with operations."

I kept thinking — where are YOU in this? Because anyone can write those words. That CV could belong to literally anyone.

The scary part is they had been applying for months and couldn't understand why nobody was calling back.

The Wikimedia Foundation — the nonprofit behind Wikipedia — explicitly lists Ghana and Kenya as countries they hire from.

Not "open to Africa."
Not "remote worldwide — some restrictions apply."

Ghana. Kenya. Written in the job description.

This is what we mean when we say verified.

Not every company that says "worldwide" means it.
