OPEN STATEMENT ON DANGME REPRESENTATION IN THE KATAMANSO 200TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
Key Mama, greetings to you and the entire organizing committee of the Katamanso Bicentenary celebrations.
As we prepare to commemorate 200 years since the historic Battle of Katamanso (also known as the Battle of Dodowa) on August 7, 1826, it is essential to ensure full and accurate representation of all communities that contributed to this pivotal victory.
The Battle of Katamanso was a defining moment for the Ga-Adangme (Ga-Dangbe) people. Dangme warriors from various traditional areas played vital roles through effective use of the local terrain and coordinated tactics. Historical accounts note that Ga-Dangme forces, supported by reconnaissance from allies, laid ambushes in the Dodowa forest and surrounding areas. These tactics exploited the forested landscape for surprise attacks, disrupting the Ashanti advance. Forces from Prampram, Ningo, and Ada, among others, provided critical manpower and launched decisive follow-up assaults that critically weakened the Ashanti positions, contributing directly to the rout of the larger invading force led by Asantehene Osei Yaw Akoto and his commanders.
The sacred Pinkwa forest (and the battlefield groves near Dodowa/Katamanso) stands as a living testament to the fierce fighting, strategic ambushes, and sacrifices made by our Dangme forebears. Local traditions and historical accounts highlight how Dangme warriors skillfully utilized the terrain—including forested zones for concealment and maneuver—for decisive advantage. Honoring this heritage requires the full and visible inclusion of all connected Dangme communities.
Katamanso lies within the Kpone-Katamanso area, part of the broader Dangme geographical and cultural landscape. Neighboring traditional areas—Shai (Shai-Osudoku), Krobo (Manya Krobo and Yilo Krobo), Prampram, Ningo, and Kpone—share profound historical, cultural, ancestral, and territorial ties to the events of 1826. These Dangme communities formed essential parts of the defending forces and must be centrally recognized.
The immediate traditional towns surrounding Katamanso deserve prominent, visible roles in the celebrations. Paramount chiefs and representatives from the Shai Traditional Area and the Krobo Traditional Areas (Manya Krobo under Nene Sakite II and Yilo Krobo) must be fully integrated, as their ancestors stood shoulder to shoulder in defense of our collective lands.
While the participation of the Ada Paramount Chief, Nɛnɛ Abram Kabu Akuaku III, is valued, it cannot stand alone as the sole Dangme representation. The Dangme people comprise several distinct traditional areas—Krobo, Ada, Prampram, Shai, Ningo, Osudoku, and Kpone—each bringing unique contributions and perspectives to our shared Ga-Dangme history. Comprehensive inclusion reflects the true coalition and tactical synergy that secured victory against the Ashanti forces in 1826.
The bicentenary is a historic opportunity to present the complete narrative, including the distinctive Dangme military tactics and bravery that helped turn the tide. Full delegations and prominent roles for Shai, Krobo (Manya and Yilo), Prampram, Ningo, and Kpone will enrich the program with authentic voices, cultural performances, oral histories of Dangme warriors, and a genuine demonstration of unity.
Dangme communities do not need to plead for recognition — our ancestors earned their place on that battlefield through blood, bravery, and superior knowledge of the land. The celebrations must reflect this reality by ensuring equitable and visible participation from all relevant Dangme traditional areas.
Together, let us commemorate 200 years of Katamanso as one people, with one complete and accurate history, in the sacred spirit of the Pinkwa forest and the battlefield that binds us.
