Samira Bawumia Calls for Greater Inclusion of Women and Youth in Africa's Climate Action.
Story by Mispa Ampem Darko.
The founder of the Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC), Mrs. Samira Bawumia, has made a passionate appeal to African leaders to prioritize the involvement of women and young people in addressing the continent's climate challenges. Delivering the keynote address at AFRIWOCC 2025 in Accra, Ghana, on October 6, 2025, Mrs. Bawumia stressed the importance of connecting young voices and innovative ideas to policy, financing, and implementation to drive transformative impact across Africa.
"We must connect young voices and ideas to policy, financing and implementation to drive measurable impact and transformation across Africa," she emphasized. Mrs. Bawumia reminded leaders of their 2023 pledge to make women and children central to climate discussions and decision-making, urging them to honor this commitment.
Speaking at the conference themed *"Young Voices, Innovative Ideas, Greater Impact for Africa"*, Mrs. Bawumia highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable groups. The Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency Myriam Montrat, echoed this sentiment, noting that extreme weather events between 2022 and 2024 affected over 400 million children's education, leading to significant school days lost in developing countries.
The AFRIWOCC 2025 event brought together over 500 delegates from government, civil society, academia, and climate-focused organizations across Africa and the diaspora. The conference concludes on October 7, 2025, with a climate concert featuring performances by notable artists.
Mrs. Samira Bawumia's advocacy was recognized through her reappointment as a Global Champion of the Clean Cooking Alliance, underscoring her leadership in promoting sustainable energy solutions for African households.
