The court set aside the 2024 High Court judgement that found her guilty of causing financial loss to the state and related offences during her tenure as MASLOC boss between 2013 and 2016, with losses pegged at nearly GH¢90 million.

Court of Appeal Acquits and Discharges Former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu; AG To Appeal To Supreme Court

In a major twist to one of Ghana's most watched anti-corruption cases, the Court of Appeal has acquitted and discharged former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Christine Tamakloe-Attionu.

The three-member panel delivered its judgement today, July 30, 2026, upholding her appeal against the 10-year custodial sentence imposed by the Accra High Court in 2024.

Background:

Tamakloe-Attionu was convicted of 78 counts including conspiracy to steal, stealing, money laundering, causing financial loss to the state and breaches of procurement laws. The court held that her actions during her tenure between 2013 and 2016 resulted in financial losses of nearly GH¢90 million to the state.

She had been granted permission by the High Court in 2021 to travel to the United States for medical treatment while her trial was ongoing but failed to return, prompting the court to declare her absconded and continue the trial in absentia. She was later extradited to Ghana to serve her sentence.

In her written submission filed on February 10, 2026, her lawyers argued that the charges against her were defective and lacked sufficient particulars, and that there were fundamental errors in the trial process.

State prosecutors had defended the original ruling and asked the Court of Appeal to uphold the conviction.

Fallout and Reactions:

The acquittal has sparked massive public reaction.
1. The Attorney General has announced he will appeal the acquittal and discharge at the Supreme Court. 2. Former Attorney General Godfred Dame has demanded an explanation from the AG over the acquittal. 3. Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni described the ruling as "shameful and scary" 4. The NPP's Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) has alleged the acquittal was "masterminded" and "choreographed", while the defence team says it is happy with the ruling.
Many Ghanaians online have described the decision as a sad day for accountability in the management of public funds, fearing it sets a bad precedent.

The case was one of the most closely watched corruption-related prosecutions in recent years, with implications for public accountability and enforcement of anti-corruption laws.

All eyes are now on the Supreme Court as the Attorney General prepares to challenge the Appeal Court's decision.
