A perfect instance of how Oobakɛ is used:

At the sod-cutting ceremony for the Dodowa-Afienya-Dawhenya road, President John Mahama gestures to his security and says:

“Allow her to come! That is a member of the Council of State. Heyy! Her Excellency, come! Kaafo Amɛdaaŋ. Aekoo! Oobakɛ.”

THE AGOTIME PEOPLE: UNIQUE FOR KENTE WEAVING AND THEIR DANGME-EWE HERITAGE

Write up by - Kente Festival, Agotime Traditional Area, Ghana

The Agotime people, ethnically part of the Ga-Dangme (Dangme) group, call their chiefs “Nene” rather than the Ewe title “Togbe.” They do so because “Nene” is the traditional Dangme title for chiefs, and although the Agotime later adopted aspects of Ewe culture - particularly language - they preserved this title as a reflection of their roots and chieftaincy system.

Ethnic Origin – Dangme Roots

The Agotime trace their origin to the Dangme, a subgroup of the Ga-Dangme people of southeastern Ghana. In Dangme tradition, “Nene” is the respected title for a chief, still used today in towns such as Ada, Shai, and Krobo.

Over time, the Agotime migrated eastward and settled among Ewe-speaking communities in the Volta Region, close to Togo. While they embraced the Ewe language and many cultural aspects, they retained vital elements of their original identity - most notably their chieftaincy titles and lineage structures.

Language and Identity

Among the Ewe, the common title for a chief, elder, or ancestor is “Togbe” (or Tɔgbe), widely used across the Volta Region, Togo, and Benin. Living in close contact with Ewe-speaking communities, the Agotime integrated the Ewe language and traditions into daily life. At the same time, they maintained the title “Nene” as a way of honoring their Dangme roots and chieftaincy heritage.

By continuing to use “Nene,” the Agotime assert a distinct ethnic and historical identity - not only Ewe, despite speaking the language, but also firmly connected to their Dangme origins. This is a pattern common among groups that have migrated or lived near other ethnic communities for centuries: they adopt the dominant local language yet preserve older traditions as a way of safeguarding identity.

Now, let’s introduce you to the Konor of Agotime - the Oga kpatakpata, the Supremo himself - Nene Nuer Keteku IV.
