Air India flight AI180, operating on the San Francisco–Mumbai route, made an emergency landing at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport early Tuesday after a technical issue was detected in the aircraft’s left engine. The flight landed safely at 12:45 am.
At around 5:20 am, all passengers were safely deplaned as a precaution. The pilot informed passengers that the step was taken in the interest of safety. No injuries were reported. The airline has not yet disclosed specific details about the nature of the technical fault.
This incident follows a series of recent technical issues involving Air India aircraft. On June 16, flight AI315 from Hong Kong to Delhi returned shortly after takeoff due to a midair technical snag. A similar return occurred on June 15 involving another Delhi-bound flight. Additionally, a Zurich-bound flight from Delhi was delayed the same day following mandatory checks on a Boeing 787-8 aircraft.
Air India confirmed that technical inspections are ongoing and that alternative arrangements are being made for affected passengers.
