Investigate Abanga, Yamin over alleged galamsey activities – AG directs EOCO

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has directed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate two National Democratic Congress executives over allegations of illegal mining.

In a letter issued on July 15, to EOCO, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine stated, “I am directing your office to invite the following persons named in recent credible reports for interrogation, namely, Mr. Yakubu Abanga and Mr. Joseph Yamin.”

It further directs the office to investigate other persons found complicit in illegal mining activities.

“The scope of this investigation should include the matters highlighted in Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s report on illegal mining,” the letter added.

The EOCO is offered the opportunity to invite the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission to aid investigations.

Some small-scale miners have named NDC Organiser, Joseph Yamin and third Vice Chairman, Yakubu Abanga, among persons allegedly fueling activities of a rogue anti-galamsey taskforce terrorising legitimate miners.

New Ghc1 Fuel Levy Implementation Starts Today

The revised Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141), officially comes into force today, Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Announced by the government and implemented by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the new levy structure follows an earlier postponement aimed at monitoring global market trends and preserving stability in domestic fuel prices.

The decision to activate the new rates was made in consultation with the Ministries of Finance and Energy, following a comprehensive review of key economic indicators.

Authorities say the move is part of broader efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability while addressing critical financing needs in the energy sector.

The amendment introduces revised rates under the Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL) on various petroleum products. The adjustments are intended to raise additional revenue to clear legacy debts and support infrastructure development in the energy sector.

Mahama declares galamsey a national emergency, orders arrest of rogue taskforces

President John Mahama has declared the widespread environmental devastation caused by illegal mining a national emergency, promising urgent action to confront the deepening crisis.

Addressing a durbar during his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Western North Region on Tuesday, July 15, he expressed grave concern over the extent of destruction in Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi Anhwiaso.

The President blamed illegal mining activities for the alarming degradation of forest reserves and water bodies.

“We are alarmed by the environmental destruction that is reported across Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi-Anhwiaso, mainly due to illegal mining. I must be honest, this is a national emergency.

"The national taskforce will continue its efforts to halt illegal mining in our forest reserves and on our water bodies,” President Mahama said.

He did not spare individuals hiding behind the fight against galamsey to perpetrate extortion.

“I have also noticed the activities of the illegal anti-galamsey taskforces that go round extorting money from legitimate small-scale mining companies,” he noted.

“I have requested the authorities to arrest and prosecute any individuals involved in this illegal anti-galamsey activity,” he warned.

Govt Will Only Fund Fuel For Official Duties – Presidency Clarifies

Presidential Aide for Government Communications at the Presidency, Dr. Sammy Ayeh, has clarified that while fuel allowances and coupons for political appointees have been scrapped, the government will continue to cover fuel expenses strictly for official duties.

This comes in the wake of the government’s decision to cancel the payment of fuel allowances and the allocation of fuel to all political appointees.

Speaking in an interview with Class FM on Tuesday, July 15, he explained that the move forms part of broader cost-cutting measures aimed at reducing government expenditure and ensuring fiscal discipline.

He stressed that this new approach eliminates direct fuel allowances and coupons, focusing instead on funding essential operations through centralised procurement.

“But as for operational funding, fuel money that will be used to fuel the vehicles of political appointees and government officials, will be directly bought by the government.

“It will not be an allowance that will be paid directly to the appointees, but the government will take the cost for fuel that is being used or that will be used for only official purposes,” he stated.

“I acted in self-defence” – Hawa Koomson justifies use of pepper spray

“I was at the voting centre with my security, but the police insisted I enter alone, saying unauthorised persons were not allowed in. I did not go there to cause trouble,” she said.

She recounted that she was specifically targeted by individuals she recognized from Kasoa, alleging they were affiliated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“As soon as the thugs entered, I identified two NDC guys from Kasoa. One of them shouted, ‘Where is Hawa Koomson?’ and they just pounced on me. So, the claims that I went there with ill intentions and carried pepper spray for that purpose are unfounded.”

The former MP maintained that her response was triggered by a perceived threat to her life.

Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has filed a fresh action at the High Court seeking a declaration that Shining Stars does not exist in law.

The Organization is behind one of the petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice. Lawyers for the Chief Justice say there are no records showing the existence of any such organization.

In the suit sighted by 3News, Justice Torkornoo is praying the High Court to declare the The Shinning Stars of Ghana as non-existent in law or fact.

Torkornoo also wants the High Court to declare as “void” the petition filed by The Shinning Stars of Ghana to the President on February 14, 2025.

“A declaration that the Petition made to the President and dated 14th February 2025 allegedly authored by a group called The Shinning Stars of Ghana is void on account of the fact that The Shinning Stars of Ghana does not exist in law or fact,” the suit noted.

Chief Justice Torkornoo sues Ghana at ECOWAS court

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has taken her suspension battle beyond Ghana’s borders, filing a case at the ECOWAS Community Court in Abuja, Nigeria.

The suit, filed on July 4, accuses the Republic of Ghana of violating her human rights.

According to Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai, who confirmed the development on Facebook, the Chief Justice is challenging the legal basis of her suspension.

She argues that the move has effectively removed her from office without a final court ruling, denying her the right to serve in a position to which she was constitutionally appointed.
