Are Your Social Media Marketing Efforts a Waste of Time and Money?

So it's been 30 days, 60 days or even 90 days of executing your social media strategy. Now it's time to determine whether your social media efforts are driving real results.

Unfortunately, not many people recognise the importance of audit and analytics in social media marketing. However, conducting a thorough social media audit can help you identify areas for improvement in your strategy.

So here is a Step-by-Step Audit Guide:

📌Review Your Social Media Objectives: go back and look at what objectives you set before you began executing the strategy. This will help you know exactly what you are looking from in the audit.

📌Analyze Performance Metrics and KPIs: Track likes, comments, shares, and mentions for Engagement. Monitor the number of people seeing your content for Reach and Impressions. For website traffic and conversions, measure the unique visitors, bounce rate and average time spent.

📌Evaluate Content Performance: Assess the performance of different content types (e.g., videos, images, blog posts). Focus on your highly engaged content. Identify top-performing content themes and topics.

📌Assess Social Media Channel Performance: Track engagement, reach, and conversions for each platform you are using. And identify areas of growth.

📌Identify Areas for Improvement: this is where you write your recommendations. By identifying gaps in your content strategy. Determining which channels require optimization and adjusting resource allocation to optimize results. Which means, probably focusing spending more ad budget on platforms that performed well.

📌Adjust and Refine Your Strategy for the next period: Update and refine your objectives based on audit findings. Update your content strategy to address gaps and optimize performance. This means focusing more on content that performed well in the previous period. Finally, reallocate resources to platforms that are working efficiently to drive results.

What are some key takeaways from your own social media audits? Share your experiences in the comments below!

Assumptions are killing your social media strategy!

How often do we assume we know what our audience wants to see on social media, only to post content that falls flat? Or, how often do we assume a particular social media platform is the best for our brand, without testing our hypothesis?

The truth is, assumptions can lead to:

📌Feelings of inadequacy
📌Frustrations
📌Lead you to give up and think social media marketing doesn't work

So, what's the fix?

Like I said yesterday, you have to see social media marketing as an experiment. Before you begin, draw or develop an experimental strategy. This should include all the ideas you have. Then begin to test each one of them for 90 days.

📌Here's a detailed structure

1. Test your content: Experiment with different formats, captions, and hashtags to see what resonates with your audience.

2. Measure your metrics: Track your engagement rates, reach, and conversions to see what's working and what's not.

3. Validate your findings: Use your data to inform future social media decisions and refine your strategy for the next quarter. This is the quarter where you are more sure of what content will work

Always remember that as a social media manager, adopting a culture of experimentation and data-driven decision-making, will help you to:

📌Increase engagement and reach
📌Improve ROI and conversions
📌Enhance your brand's social media presence

Social Media Marketing is Science.

As social media marketers, we often rely on creativity and intuition to drive our campaigns. Even though we constnantly strive for certainty.

We want to know that our campaigns will drive results, that our messaging will resonate, and that our strategies will pay off.

The truth is, the only way to be certain is to see marketing as a Science and to approach each of our social media marketing ideas as experiments.

So, how do we approach marketing as an experiment?

1. Hypothesize and Test
Develop assumptions (ideas) about what might work, and then test them. Use data to inform your decisions, but don't be afraid to try new things.

2. Iterate and Refine
Marketing is not a one-and-done activity. It's an ongoing process of iteration and refinement. Continuously gather feedback, analyze results, and adjust your strategies.

3. Embrace Failure
Not every experiment will succeed. But that's okay. Failure is an opportunity to learn and improve.

4. Stay Agile
Marketing requires agility. Be prepared to pivot when circumstances change or when new opportunities arise.

By approaching marketing as an experiment, we can foster a culture of innovation, experimentation, and continuous improvement.

You may not be a small business owner...yet

But...

Imagine you are a small business owner, sitting in a cozy shared workspace or even in your cool home office. You've been running a social ad to boost sales for the past 7 days. So here you are, behind your PC, tracking and analysing your ad performance and realising high engagement with very little sales.

This means, you are not meeting your ad objective/goal. And now, after 7 days you are starting to get frustrated.

Now stop imagining and listen to me...

As an individual who uses social media mainly for entertainment, here is how you may be contributing to a small business owner's frustration with social ads.

But first, I want you to understand this 👇

In the age of digital marketing, small businesses often rely on social media and online ads to reach their target audience. This is because it is relatively cheaper with high returns when done RIGHT.

However, mindless engagement with these ads can have unintended negative consequences for both consumers and businesses.

For the small business, here is what is happening:
📌Misleading Metrics: When you engage with ads without genuine interest, it skews the metrics that small businesses rely on to measure success. High engagement rates may lead to false confidence, prompting businesses to allocate resources inefficiently.

📌Dilution of Ad Value/Quality: Engaging with ads mindlessly can dilute the quality of an ad. When an ad is often clicked and left alone, it sends a message to the algorithm that it is an ineffective ad. Thereby reducing it's effectiveness while increasing cost.

📌Resource Misallocation: Small businesses often operate with limited budgets. If they invest in ads that receive engagement for the wrong reasons, they may waste money on ineffective campaigns instead of focusing on strategies that yield real results.

For you the social media user, here's what will happen:
📌Customer Confusion: Mindless engagement can lead to mixed signals about what you want. If a business receives feedback that is driven more by impulse than genuine interest, it may misinterpret trends and alter its offerings in unproductive ways. Causing you to be frustrated for not getting what you want.

📌Frustration With Unwanted ads: When you engage with ads without intention, you may eventually feel frustrated by irrelevant products or services ads. Facebook, or Instagram will continue to show yooou similar ads for clicking on one you weren't interested in.

THE WAY FORWARD

While engaging with ads may seem harmless, mindless interactions can have significant repercussions for small businesses. And YOU!

It’s essential for both you and businesses to approach advertising thoughtfully, ensuring that engagement reflects genuine interest and value. By doing so, we can foster a more authentic marketplace that benefits everyone involved. Including YOU!

So here's what you should do today and always, if you are not interested PLEASE LEAVE THAT AD ALONE.

Mastering Content Creation and Curation

Content creation is all about producing and publishing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience. The other aspect is Content curation. Which is the process of finding, selecting, and sharing relevant, valuable, and high-quality content from other sources to complement your created content.

Content comes in various formats and they are:

1. Text-based content: Blog posts, articles, social media posts, email newsletters.

2. Visual content: Images, infographics, graphics, videos.

3. Audio content: Podcasts, audiobooks.

4. Video content: Explainer videos, vlogs, live streams.

Always remember that your choice of content style and form always depends on your target audience and buyer persona.
