New GOC Leadership Worship And Give Thanks At Our Lady Of Mercy Catholic Church, Tema
The newly elected President of the Ghana Olympic, Mr. Richard Akpokavie on Sunday led his team of Board members to Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church to give thanks and ask for more divine blessings, guidance, vision and directions as they take up the leadership of Ghana Sports, especially the Olympic Sports and other important international world and commonwealth championships.
The service was led by Rev Father David Arko Amissah, Parish Priest in charge of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Community One, Tema who preached on what national office holders can offer the nation than depending on what they will get in their reign as office holders.
The Priest highlighted the significance of teamwork, declaring, “May God bless you so that you can work as a team. When everyone has passion and individual interests, it can be difficult to hold the center. But once you work together as a team and do not undermine each other, you will be assured of success.” He further illustrated the point by saying, “The strongest chain cannot be strong if one part is weak. You cannot become a strong team if all of you collaborate but one person does not cooperate or support.”
Reverend Father Amissah prayed for the GOC leadership, saying, “We pray that God will grant you divine wisdom and divine grace, so that together, you will work as a team for the good of this country and for the name you bear. Families will count on you, and the church will be looking up to you, Mr. Akpokavie, because we know you will make us proud.”
He advised the new President and Board member to be humble, disciplined and work hard as a team to bring glory and honour to the nation.
The day coincided with the birthday of the President and it was a modest celebration with his family, friends and members of the Ghana Olympic Committee.
Mr. Richard Akpokavie thanked everyone who supported his campaign and idea to head the Olympic Movement in Ghana.
He noted that he is focused on his promises to unite the front, rank and file of Ghana Sports and ensure that athletes' voices are heard and encourage corporate Ghana to invest in sports.
The day coincided with his birthday and he presented an undisclosed amount to the church.
Among the GOC executive members who attended the service at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church were 1st Vice President Mawuko Afadzinu, 3rd Vice President Ernest Danso, Mohammed Muniru the Secretary General, Treasurer Evans Yeboah, Deputy Treasurer Nii Lante Bannerman, Kamal Sulley Bawa Fuseini and George Lamptey.
Philippina Frimpong who works at the National Sports Authority and the Ghana Athletics and Chris Essilfi Chef de Mission for Rio 2016, Alhaji Shaaban Mohammed were also present.
The President of the GOC thanked the few media who showed love and were present at the service.
Treasurer Evans Yeboah, donated an undisclosed amount of money as seed money to enable the church to continue remembering them in prayer as they seek a successful tenure
He hinted that the new board will introduce themselves to other important people like the Ga Mantse, the Military High Command, Inspector General of Police and others.
Last Friday the President of the GOC and the board were at the residence of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Nuhu Sharabutu.

ALGIERS, May 3, 2025 - On this World Press Freedom Day, on behalf of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, I would like to send a message of gratitude and solidarity to all the media professionals who bring African sport to life and shine every day.

AFRICAN SPORT ECOSYSTEM You are much more than just witnesses to our competitions and events. You are the essential builders of our African Olympic and sports ecosystem. Through your daily work, your perseverance, and your passion, you give a voice to our athletes, a face to their sacrifices, and an echo to their triumphs.

As Africa increasingly asserts itself on the international sporting scene, your role becomes more crucial than ever. Every article, every report, every analysis you produce contributes to forging a strong, authentic, and globally respected African sporting identity.

FREEDOM & INDEPENDENCE As journalists, you bear a considerable responsibility. Your pens and cameras shape the stories that inspire our youth and influence the perception of African sport worldwide. Your freedom of expression and your independence are essential pillars of the good sports governance we tirelessly promote.

IOC PRESIDENT This year, 2025, is particularly significant for the African Olympic Movement. Following the resounding success of our 22nd General Assembly in Algiers and the 5th Continental Athletes' Forum in Namibia, attended by our greatest pride, Kirsty Koventry, the first African woman to hold the highest office at the IOC.

"Dear Sisters and Brothers, We find ourselves at a pivotal moment that requires quality media coverage.

"With the Algerian School Games, the African Youth Games in Angola, the African Games in Cairo, and on the horizon, the historic Youth Olympic Games in Dakar 2026, we need all your expertise to tell this new chapter in African sporting history.

"ANOCA is firmly committed to supporting your work and facilitating your mission. Today, we are launching the "Continental Capacity Building Program for African Sports Journalists," which will offer specialised training and privileged accreditation for major upcoming Olympic events. "I would also like to announce the creation of the "African Olympic Journalism Excellence Award," which will annually recognise the best journalistic contributions to the promotion of Olympic values on our continent.

AFRICAN SPORTS MEDIA FORUM "I invite you to actively participate in the first African Sports Media Forum, which we will organise in October 2025 in Cairo, in collaboration with the Union of African Sports Confederations and IAPS Africa. It will be a unique platform for exchanges and reflection on the future of sports journalism in Africa."

"On this symbolic day, I call on all stakeholders of the African Olympic Movement - athletes, leaders, coaches, and partners - to recognise the paramount importance of press freedom and to cooperate closely with you, media professionals, in a spirit of openness and transparency. I humbly ask you, dear sisters and brothers, to continue to work tirelessly as you have always done, faithfully reporting the truth; this is what matters most for our emancipation and development.

Jersey beyond the pitch: PUMA celebrates Ghana’s football heritage with bold design
Picture Ghanaian football icon Abedi Ayew Pele, seated on the floor, his captain’s armband proudly displayed—exuding the aura of a man about to deliver a footballing masterclass.
A three-time African Footballer of the Year and former Black Stars captain, Abedi Pele remains a symbol of Ghana’s sporting greatness. Now, he takes centre stage once again, this time leading PUMA’s latest campaign — an evocative tribute to Ghana’s national team jersey.
In a groundbreaking collaboration, PUMA teamed up with Ghanaian designer Jefferson Osei to unveil a visually striking campaign, “God Bless Our Homeland Ghana”, reimagining the Black Stars jersey to coincide with Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations last Thursday.
This was not just another sportswear unveiling—it was a cultural spectacle.
Spearheaded by the legendary Abedi Pele, the campaign featured a star-studded cast, including musicians Jackline Acheampong (Gyakie), Livingstone Etse Satekla (Stonebwoy), rapper Kelvin Boakye, Darryl Paa Kwesi Bannerman-Martin (Joey B), Samuel Ofei Ankra Badu, female footballer Patricia Nana Boakye of Ridge City FC and Abedi Pele’s model daughter, Imani Ayew.
Abedi sitting calmly
Leadership: Abedi Pele dons the iconic captain's armband once again in a photoshoot alongside music star Gyakie and his model daughter Imani
But it was that striking image of Abedi Pele—seated, calm and commanding, with the captain’s armband proudly displayed—that resonated most.
It wasn’t just a pose; it was a symbol of leadership, resilience and the enduring legacy of a man who defined an era of Ghanaian football.
One of the campaign’s most striking visuals captured Abedi pulling a vintage white Mercedes-Benz W124 (V-Boot), with his ‘teammates’—Stonebwoy, Gyakie, Joey B and Imani—perched on the bonnet or seated inside the stationary car.
Abedi pulling teammates
Football legend Abedi Pele symbolically leads his 'teammates,' pulling a vintage Mercedes-Benz (V-Boot) in a striking photoshoot tribute
The image was not just playful nostalgia but a powerful nod to Ghana’s footballing journey, where teamwork, struggle and determination have defined the Black Stars’ rise on the global stage.
Jersey that tells a story
For this campaign, PUMA and Osei enlisted Ghanaian painter Daniel Alum Jasper to create a custom print for the home jersey.
The design is more than fabric—it is a visual tribute to Ghana’s cultural identity, inspired by the Gold Coast’s heritage.
It incorporates traditional Adinkra symbols representing unity, resilience and cooperation, seamlessly merging artistry with sport.
More than a fashion statement, the jersey’s intricate patterns pay homage to Ghana’s diverse ethnic groups —Ewe, Hausa, Asante, Fante, Dagbani and Ga — creating a kit that unites a nation under one flag.
On his Instagram page, Osei revealed the deeper purpose behind the project:
“My goal for this kit was to connect people from all Ghanaian ethnic tribes, both locally and in the diaspora—to bring back the love and unite the tribes as one.
My design was heavily influenced by conversations with the Black Stars players, my family and the local people, as well as Ghana’s current political climate. This kit embodies their shared desire for a more unified Ghana.”
The campaign also re-imagines the nostalgic schoolyard game ‘Counters Ball’, a childhood favourite in Ghana where bottle caps became makeshift footballs in playground tournaments.
This playful tribute captures the spirit of grassroots football—where many of Ghana’s greatest stars, including Pele, first honed their craft.
Evolution of jerseys
Gone are the days when football jerseys were just kits worn by players during matches. Globalisation and powerful branding have transformed them into lifestyle statements, crossing cultural and demographic boundaries.
Few brands understand this shift better than PUMA, Ghana’s official kit sponsor since 2005. Over the years, the German sportswear giant has redefined football fashion, designing apparel that not only supports the national team but also celebrates Ghanaian culture.
Beyond its traditional match-day kits, PUMA has launched fashion-forward collections, such as its ‘Football Culture Fanwear Collection’, producing T-shirts, track jackets and hoodies tailored for fans who embrace football as part of their daily identity.
However, this latest campaign is more than just another marketing exercise. It is a statement. A bold, artistic and deeply symbolic narrative and a seamless fusion of sport, culture and artistry.
This is more than a football jersey — it is a story woven into fabric, one that will stand the test of time.
By merging tradition with contemporary design, the German sportswear giant has once again proven that the most powerful brands do not just sell products—they sell stories. And this is a story worth telling.
