His heart swelled with pride and excitement as he made his way through the crowded streets, eager to meet his newborn niece for the first time, with him were gifts, 10 big sachets of golden more and Big Tin milk and chocolate, dippers and pampers for the new born.
As he joyful walked through the street with full his package he stumbled upon a scene of chaos and brutality a mob had gathered around a young man, their fists raised in anger and accusation.
"What did he do?" Emeka asked, his voice trembling with fear and confusion as he edged closer to the crowd.
"He's a thief! He stole from my store!" a woman shouted and pointed at emeka, her words echoed which gave the angry mob the liver to divert towards emeka, with murmurs of the crowd.
"Me a thief, how?", He confusedly asked the woman who accused him of stealing
"Yes, he stole my golden more, 10 sachets" she said
" Me how?, No, you've got the wrong person, I'm innocent, I don't even know you madam"
Emeka's heart sank as he realized the gravity of the situation he had stumbled upon a case of mistaken identity, and the consequences would be dire.
Immediately the dragged the bag he was carrying, forcefully opened it and ransacked it, lo and behold it was confirmed.
"No be only Golden more this man na correct thief, see oo, even milk and chocolate dippers even follow self," a random thugs screamed as the ransacked Emeka's bag.
"Jesus" everyone echoed as the items were brought out one after the other.
"Am innocent, I bought all this with my money, i didn't steal them," he stammered still in shock of the allegations
"Madam you sure say this things na you get am?, Because you dey complain about golden more, the milk and pampers nko?" Another thug asked for serious clarity.
But the woman agreed to the possession and claimed everything,
Emeka tried to speak out but before he could react, the mob descended upon him like a pack of wild animals, their blows raining down upon him with merciless fury.
Emeka cried out in pain as he tried to defend himself, but it was no use their rage knew no bounds, and they would stop at nothing to exact their twisted form of justice.
"Stop! Please, I'm innocent!" He cried out from the crowd, but it was drowned out by the deafening roar of the mob.
"Please, I'm innocent," he tried to speak out but the pain and terror as the blows continued to rain down upon him, each one driving him closer to the brink of oblivion.
And then, just as he felt himself slipping away, the mob dragged him to the ground and set him ablaze, the flames licking at his skin with searing heat.
In that moment of agony and despair, Emeka's thoughts turned to his sister, Ada, and the newborn niece he would never get to meet. He prayed for their safety, knowing that he would never see them again.
Meanwhile, Ada waited anxiously for her brother's arrival, her heart filled with joy and anticipation at the thought of introducing him to her newborn daughter. But as the hours passed and Emeka failed to appear, a sense of unease settled over her like a dark cloud.
"What's happening, he should have arrived by now, the last time we spoke he told me he was already in my street, this is almost an hour now yet, what's happening" ada left in thought
And then, just as she was about to give up hope, she heard the sounds of commotion outside her door a crowd had gathered, their voices raised in anger and accusation.
With a sinking heart, Ada rushed outside, her eyes widening in horror as she beheld the scene before her, her brother, Emeka, lying motionless on the ground, his body engulfed in flames.
"No! Emeka!" Ada screamed, her voice raw with grief and disbelief as she pushed through the crowd to reach him.
But it was too late by the time she reached his side, Emeka's life had already slipped away, his body a charred husk of what it once was.
"What happened, who did this to my brother?", She asked but everyone kept mute staring at her like a fool.
"Your brother na thief, your brother stole golden more, ordinary golden more", a random person broke the silence
"No my brother is innocent... my brother was coming to visit me.", She groaned.
As Ada cradled her brother's lifeless body in her arms, tears streaming down her face, then a little boy ran towards the crowd, searching for the mother, saw her and ran towards her
"Mummy mummy," the little boy said as he ran to his mother.
"Ik, where have you been since I have been looking for you, oya take this provision to the store", the woman who accused emeka of theft commanded her son
"Aunty nk requested I follow her to the house so that she could give me the money for the golden more she bought", he responded.
"You say what?", A random person asked him.
"I mean aunty nk bought a roll of golden more from the store, but forgot the money at home, so she pleaded I follow her home so that she can Hand over the money to me at once, here is her money ", he narrated as he handed over the money to her
"Jesus Christ" everyone shouted in disbelief and shock, then began to disappear one after the other
Between a twinkle of an eye, the whole place was desserted, just the Ada na her brothers lifeless body.
The accuser of the brethren took a sharp lift with her son leaving the items she wanted to confiscate to herself, behind and was on the run.
But for Emeka, justice had come too late. He was gone, his innocence lost forever to the merciless hands of jungle justice.
And as Ada wept for her brother, she vowed to fight for justice in his name, to ensure that no one else would suffer the same fate as he had.
For in the end, it was not just Emeka who had been robbed of his life it was all those who loved him, left behind to pick up the shattered pieces of their broken hearts.
Say no to false accusation
