NERVOUS SYSTEM
TOPIC: Central Nervous System (CSN)
The central nervous system consist of the CEREBRUM, CEREBELLUM and BRAIN STEM
LET'S GET STARTED!!
Here are the descriptions of the Cerebrum, Cerebellum, and Brain Stem, along with a labeled diagram:
*Cerebrum*
The Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and is responsible for processing sensory information, controlling movement, and managing higher-level cognitive functions such as thought, emotion, and memory. It is divided into two hemispheres (left and right) and is further divided into four lobes:
- Frontal lobe: responsible for executive functions, motor control, and language processing
- Parietal lobe: processes sensory information related to touch and spatial awareness
- Temporal lobe: plays a key role in processing auditory information and memory
- Occipital lobe: primarily responsible for processing visual information
*Cerebellum*
The Cerebellum is located at the base of the brain and is responsible for coordinating movement, balance, and posture. It also plays a role in learning new motor skills and remembering them. The cerebellum is divided into three parts:
- Hemispheres: similar to the cerebrum, but smaller and more specialized for motor control
- Vermis: connects the two hemispheres and coordinates movement
- Flocculonodular lobe: involved in balance and equilibrium
*Brain Stem*
The Brain Stem connects the cerebrum to the spinal cord and regulates many of the body's automatic functions, such as:
- Breathing
- Heart rate
- Blood pressure
- Body temperature
- Hunger and thirst
- Sleep and arousal
The brain stem is divided into three parts:
- Midbrain: connects the cerebrum to the pons and medulla oblongata
- Pons: involved in controlling sleep and arousal, as well as sensory processing
- Medulla oblongata: regulates many of the body's automatic functions, such as breathing and heart rate
