Corporate backing grows for Black Stars’ World Cup preparations

Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama has pledged significant financial support towards Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with his company Engineers & Planners contributing $5 million to a national fundraising effort for the Ghana national football team.

The contribution forms part of a wider campaign aimed at raising funds to support the team’s logistics, training, and overall readiness ahead of the tournament, which is scheduled to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Officials believe the funding could help reduce financial pressure on the authorities responsible for organising the team’s participation, although details of how the funds will be managed have not been fully outlined publicly.

The move reflects a growing trend of support from private individuals and companies, as stakeholders come together to boost Ghana’s chances of remaining competitive on football’s biggest stage.

Ghanaian Musicians Donate to Black Stars Campaign

Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy have contributed a combined $201,000 to support the Ghana national football team as preparations build toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The donations were announced during the official launch of a national fundraising campaign aimed at mobilising resources for the team. Shatta Wale donated $100,000, while Stonebwoy contributed $101,000.

The event was attended by John Dramani Mahama, who used the occasion to call for unity. In a symbolic moment, he invited the two long-time rivals onto the stage and encouraged them to embrace, a gesture that was met with applause from attendees.

The fundraising initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen financial and public backing for the Black Stars ahead of the tournament. The public show of unity between the two artists has been widely welcomed, with many viewing it as a positive signal of collaboration within Ghana’s entertainment industry and a boost to national morale.

Ghana Police introduce digital-first approach to traffic checks

The Ghana Police Service has announced a significant change in the way routine traffic stops are conducted, as part of ongoing reforms under Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Under the new directive, officers are no longer allowed to demand or seize physical driver’s licences during standard checks. Instead, motorists can provide their licence number, which officers will use to verify details electronically while the driver keeps the physical card.

Authorities say the change is aimed at reducing prolonged roadside interactions, easing congestion at checkpoints, and addressing concerns about bribery. Officers have also been cautioned to avoid conduct that wastes motorists’ time or undermines professional standards.

The directive reflects the IGP’s stated “zero tolerance” approach to corruption, with warnings that both officers and civilians involved in bribery risk facing disciplinary or legal consequences. The policy is part of a broader effort to promote accountability and professionalism within the service.

The shift is supported by digital tools that allow officers to access driver records in real time. It also aligns with wider plans to modernise traffic enforcement, including the use of automated systems such as Trafitec GH, which relies on cameras and scanning technology to detect violations and issue electronic notices.

While the initiative has been broadly welcomed by many road users as a practical step toward reform, its long-term success will depend on consistent enforcement and the reliability of the supporting technology.

President Mahama Confident in Ghana’s Economic Resilience

President John Mahama has expressed confidence that Ghana’s economy is now better positioned to handle global shocks, following a year of policy initiatives by his administration. Speaking on Wednesday, March 18, during his “Resetting Ghana Tour” in the Bono Region, he emphasized that a strong domestic economy is crucial, particularly in light of recent international tensions involving Israel, Iran, and the United States.

He noted that past crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, exposed vulnerabilities even in countries with substantial financial reserves. “In this world, unexpected events can occur at any time. If your monetary system is not well cushioned, such shocks can destabilise the economy,” Mahama said.

To strengthen Ghana’s economic resilience, the President highlighted efforts to tighten monetary policy and stabilize the economy. “I have hope that the measures we have put in place in our first year have strengthened the economy. Even with ongoing global tensions, our economy will be able to withstand the impact,” he added.

Mahama also shared plans for the government’s proposed 24-hour economic model, which aims to build modern market centers nationwide. These centers are expected to include facilities such as a Women’s Development Bank, police and fire stations, cold storage, daycare services for traders’ children, restaurant areas, and transportation hubs.

According to the President, the initiative seeks to boost productivity, support women-owned businesses, and foster a more efficient and equitable economic environment across Ghana.

President Mahama Calls for Action on Rising Housing Costs

During a meeting with Organised Labour at the Jubilee House, John Dramani Mahama expressed concern about the increasing cost of housing in Ghana and its impact on citizens.

He stressed the need for stronger cooperation between government, labour groups, and the private sector to address the situation. According to him, a coordinated national housing policy is necessary to help make accommodation more affordable and accessible.

The discussion formed part of broader efforts to tackle economic pressures facing workers, with housing identified as a key area requiring urgent attention.

Court to Hear Extradition Case of “Abu Trica”

A Ghanaian man, Fredrick Kumi, who is also known in court documents as Emmanuel Baah Obeng and widely referred to as Abu Trica, is expected to return to court on March 25 for proceedings related to his possible extradition to the United States.

The hearing will form part of legal processes to determine whether he can be transferred to face charges abroad. Extradition cases typically involve the court assessing the evidence presented and ensuring that legal requirements and bilateral agreements between countries are properly followed before any decision is made.

Questions Raised Over ‘2,000 Jobs’ Coconut Waste Initiative

Nana Aba Anamoah has publicly challenged Malik Basintale, Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency, over his claim of creating 2,000 permanent jobs through the recycling of coconut waste.

The concern follows a post made by Basintale on September 30, 2025, in which he suggested that discarded coconut husks could be repurposed to generate employment while addressing environmental challenges. He stated, “This afternoon I shall be creating 2,000 permanent jobs from it while saving the environment.”

Several months on, Nana Aba Anamoah is calling for clarity and evidence to support the claim. She said, “We’ve gone beyond the ‘watch out’ stage. Kindly share the evidence of these 2,000 jobs you created. Where are they? Who has been employed and what roles do they occupy?”

She also asked for details on how beneficiaries were selected and what systems are in place to ensure the sustainability of the jobs.

Her comments have triggered wider public discussion about accountability in job creation initiatives and the importance of backing official claims with verifiable evidence.

CAF Overturns AFCON Final Result Amid Disciplinary Ruling

Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major decision regarding the recent Africa Cup of Nations final, stating that Senegal have forfeited the match and that Morocco are now recognised as champions.

According to CAF, its appeals board ruled that Senegal is “declared to have forfeited” the game. As a result, the original 1-0 outcome has been revised, with the match now “being officially recorded as 3-0” in favour of Morocco.

The final, played on January 18 in Rabat, was marked by tension and disruption. Senegal’s players, led by head coach Pape Thiaw, temporarily left the pitch in protest after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco. When play resumed following a delay, the penalty taken by Brahim Díaz was saved. Senegal later scored in extra time through Pape Gueye, initially securing what appeared to be a second continental title.

The match was further overshadowed by chaotic scenes, including attempted pitch invasions by supporters, clashes among players and officials, and disturbances involving media personnel. There were also unusual incidents on the sidelines, including efforts by ball boys to interfere with Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy during play.

Earlier disciplinary action by CAF had included fines exceeding $1 million and suspensions for individuals from both teams, although the result had initially stood.

CAF’s latest ruling significantly changes that outcome. However, the decision may yet be challenged at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which handles appeals in global sporting disputes.

Otto Addo has announced a 26-man squad for the Black Stars ahead of upcoming international friendlies against Austria and Germany, with four players earning their first call-ups.

The newcomers are Derrick Luckassen, Patrick Pfeiffer, Marvin Senaya, and Daniel Agyei. They have been included as part of preparations for future competitions, including qualifiers linked to the FIFA World Cup.

Luckassen, a centre-back currently playing for Pafos FC in Cyprus, has previously featured for several European clubs, including PSV and Hertha BSC, and was part of the team that won the 2024–25 Cypriot league title. Senaya, a defender, plays in France for AJ Auxerre and began his professional career in 2021 after developing through clubs such as Strasbourg and Sochaux.

Agyei, who plays as a forward, currently features for Turkish side Kocaelispor. Born in England, he has played for clubs including Burnley, Oxford United, and Crewe Alexandra before moving abroad. Pfeiffer, also a defender, plays for SV Darmstadt in Germany.

The squad also sees the return of several regulars, including Iñaki Williams, Ibrahim Sulemana, Thomas Partey, and Alexander Djiku.

Goalkeepers named in the squad include Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Benjamin Asare, and Joseph Anang. The defensive lineup features players such as Gideon Mensah and Jerome Opoku, alongside the newly called-up defenders.

In midfield, Thomas Partey and Elisha Owusu are among those selected, while the attacking options include Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, Kamal Deen Sulemana, and Daniel Agyei.

The friendlies are expected to give the technical team an opportunity to assess new players and strengthen the squad ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures.

Beneficiary Rules and Pension Benefits Explained

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says members of its scheme cannot list a boyfriend or girlfriend as a pension beneficiary. Instead, only recognised next of kin, typically blood relatives or legally accepted dependants, can be nominated to receive benefits.

The clarification was given by Frank Molbila, General Manager in charge of Benefits, during a regional forum held in Sunyani. The event was organised by SSNIT in partnership with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) as part of a nationwide effort to improve understanding of pensions and strengthen cooperation with organised labour.

Speaking at the forum, Mr Molbila highlighted the long-term value of the scheme, stating: “With the SSNIT pension, the longer you live the longer you benefit,”. He encouraged workers across the country to enrol and actively plan for retirement, describing the scheme as a reliable source of financial security.

He also shared figures to illustrate the scale of SSNIT’s operations. According to him, the Trust paid a total of GHC6.77 billion in pension benefits in 2025 and expects that figure to rise to about GHC8.21 billion by the end of 2026.

Mr Molbila noted that the oldest pensioner on the scheme is currently 107 years old, emphasising that payments continue for the lifetime of beneficiaries. He added that the highest monthly pension stands at GHC213,000, while the lowest is around GHC400.

On invalidity pensions, he explained that these are monthly payments for members who can no longer work due to permanent physical or mental disability. The highest invalidity pension currently stands at GHC19,923 per month, with the beneficiary aged 86 and having received payments for about 36 years. He further stated that the scheme has been in place for 32 years and that GHC40.8 million was paid out in invalidity pensions in 2025.

Mr Molbila advised members to regularly update their personal records to ensure smooth processing of benefits and avoid complications in the future.
