Join us for the launch of our latest policy insight paper exploring the pivotal role of Africa's mineral wealth in shaping the continent's economic and geopolitical futures. Despite its immense potential, Africa faces significant challenges in integrating these resources into sustainable and inclusive economies. The African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) is at the forefront of this transformation, yet it encounters complex obstacles that hinder the effective implementation of the African Mining Vision.

This paper develops a strategic foresight framework and integrates ideas of how to build anticipatory governance to tackle these pressing issues. Our findings emphasise the urgency of ratifying AMDC statutes, which are essential for aligning mineral governance with broader socioeconomic goals while addressing emerging transnational mining risks through coordinated regional responses.

Ratification is not just a procedural step; it signifies the commitment of AU Member States to responsible resource governance. The research highlights the necessity of overcoming policy inertia and fostering transparency and accountability through strategic foresight. Without ratification, national strategies risk becoming disconnected from the continent's overarching socioeconomic aspirations.

We invite you to engage with us as we delve into these vital issues and explore pathways towards a more sustainable and equitable mining sector in Africa.

ECDPM LAUNCHES ECOWAS-EAC-SADC REPORT ON AGENDA, CSO ENGAGEMENT

Regional economic communities (RECs) in Africa are tasked with promoting democratic norms in their regions.

However, the division of roles between the African Union and is often unclear, and REC involvement in democratic governance varies. This inconsistency creates challenges for civil society organisations (CSOs) trying to engage with RECs on democracy issues. The findings show that not all RECs have developed equally strong frameworks for democracy promotion, and even those that do, often lack effective mechanisms for implementation. CSOs' roles also vary across regions. We highlight ways in which civil society can engage with RECs to help advance democracy regionally.

We hope you enjoy reading this paper and look forward to receiving any comments, feedback or suggestions you may have.

Kind regards

Accra, October 9, 2024- The Deputy Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Hon. Charles Acheampong has officially launched a bilateral Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Free Roaming initiative between Ghana & Togo and Ghana & Benin.

The event held at the NCA Tower on 9th October, 2024, follows the successful implementation of the ECOWAS Roaming Initiative between Ghana and CĂ´te d'Ivoire, where citizens of both countries can now use mobile services in each other's countries without incurring

’s African Joint Operation against Cybercrime (AFJOC), which began in 2021, was instrumental in facilitating these arrests. Its mission extends beyond phishing, targeting a range of cybercrimes that plague both individuals and businesses globally.

One significant focus is business email compromise (BEC), a sophisticated form of phishing where cybercriminals trick executives into transferring large sums of money or divulging sensitive information by exploiting trust and authority.

Romance scams, another common tactic, also draw ’s attention. In these schemes, criminals create fake online identities to build relationships with their victims, often to swindle them out of money or digital assets, such as cryptocurrency.

One recent case involved a Finnish victim who was defrauded by a Nigerian cybercriminal. The Nigerian Police Force, using intelligence provided by INTERPOL and its private-sector partners, arrested the scammer in April 2024. Further investigations linked the individual to other romance fraud cases.

is the acronym for National Biometric Identity Card, a regional ID adopted in December 2014 as a tool for enhancing cross-border travel and economic integration among the countries that make up the west African political and economic bloc.

Since its launch, the rollout of the card has not been as strong as expected, but ECOWAS authorities have been pushing for its adoption as one of the ways of bringing down travel and trade barriers within the region.

The recent forum in Banjul was thus a platform for member countries to review the path so far covered, and to device ways of making the project more impactful in their quest of better addressing migration and mobility challenges.

It took place under the theme “Acceleration of the implementation of the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC) and the abolition of the 90-day stay limit/residence permits for community citizens.”

Research has shown that a new mineral, tantalum, has been discovered at Bewadze-Mankoadze in the Kibi-Winneba Belt of southern Ghana.

The mineral is found in large quantities of an igneous rock known as pegmatite.

This is contained in a published paper by Dr Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari, a lecturer at the University of Mines and Technology (UMat) in Tarkwa, together with a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, Joshua Nkansah (also of UMat), and Salaam Jansbaka Adams of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development in Somanya.

The paper is titled “Geochemical exploration for tantalum in coltan-rich pegmatites at Bewadze-Mankoadze area of the Kibi-Winneba Belt, southern Ghana: constraints from exploratory data analysis”.

The three researchers’ study covered petrographic studies of rock samples from pegmatite outcrops and statistical analysis of the major and minor elements conducted to identify the pathfinder elements of a new tantalum deposit in the area.
