Journalism Offers Recognition and Reward” – Manasseh Azure
Renowned Investigative Journalist and Author, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has described journalism as a profession that not only pays but also commands public recognition, societal influence, and enduring respect. According to him, journalism, when pursued with purpose and integrity, becomes a rewarding path that transforms lives and nations.
“Journalism pays,” Azure declared. “It gives you recognition and audience. Your voice carries weight, and people listen when you speak or write.”
He made these remarks during a Student-Staff Consultative Meeting held on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the South Legon campus of the University of Media, Arts and Communication – Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ).
The event, organized by the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies (FOJAMS) in partnership with The Multimedia Group, sought to bridge the gap between academic instruction and the practical demands of the media profession.
Azure encouraged students to embrace the profession with commitment and not be disheartened by the perceived challenges.
Sharing his personal journey, he recounted how journalism shaped his destiny, opened doors of opportunity, and positioned him as a national voice for accountability and justice.
“Don’t let the temporary struggles discourage you,” he advised. “If you are consistent, ethical, and hardworking, your work will speak for you, and your name will open doors.”
Also addressing the gathering was Mr. Kwaku Owusu Peprah (KOP), Channel Manager of Joy News. He stressed the importance of building credibility through ethical practice, discipline, and resilience. He reminded students that journalism requires sharp intellect and consistent effort, urging them to read widely, stay curious, and hold firm to the principles of truth and accuracy.
“Integrity is the currency of our profession,” KOP said. “Every report you file, every appearance you make builds or breaks your trust with the audience.”
Adding an academic perspective to the discussion, the Dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies, Prof. Etse Sikanku, underscored the value of journalism to society and the personal fulfillment it brings.
“Journalism is the most valuable thing you can do with your life,” he said. “If you are passionate about it, stay true to your call.”
Prof. Sikanku explained that the consultative meeting was part of the faculty’s efforts to deepen the link between academia and industry, ensuring that students gain practical insight and mentorship from top media professionals. He urged students to reject outdated notions that undermine the profession’s relevance.
“You have a responsibility to change the myth about journalism,” he added. “It is not a second-choice field. It is a powerful force for development and truth.”
The event was rich with insight and motivation, marked by a highly interactive atmosphere as students listened with rapt attention and responded with visible enthusiasm throughout the presentations. Many expressed deep appreciation for the speakers’ honesty, practical wisdom, and powerful reflections. The meeting ended on a high note, leaving students inspired and better informed about the realities, demands, and vast possibilities within the journalism profession. Several participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to interact directly with professionals who have walked the path they are preparing for.
The Student-Staff Consultative Meeting is part of FOJAMS’ broader mission to produce well-rounded, ethical, and industry-ready graduates. It reaffirmed UniMAC-IJ’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of media professionals equipped with both academic excellence and practical wisdom.
