Journalism Offers Recognition and Reward” – Manasseh Azure

Renowned Investigative Journalist and Author, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has described journalism as a profession that not only pays but also commands public recognition, societal influence, and enduring respect. According to him, journalism, when pursued with purpose and integrity, becomes a rewarding path that transforms lives and nations.
“Journalism pays,” Azure declared. “It gives you recognition and audience. Your voice carries weight, and people listen when you speak or write.”
He made these remarks during a Student-Staff Consultative Meeting held on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the South Legon campus of the University of Media, Arts and Communication – Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ).

The event, organized by the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies (FOJAMS) in partnership with The Multimedia Group, sought to bridge the gap between academic instruction and the practical demands of the media profession.
Azure encouraged students to embrace the profession with commitment and not be disheartened by the perceived challenges.

Sharing his personal journey, he recounted how journalism shaped his destiny, opened doors of opportunity, and positioned him as a national voice for accountability and justice.
“Don’t let the temporary struggles discourage you,” he advised. “If you are consistent, ethical, and hardworking, your work will speak for you, and your name will open doors.”

Also addressing the gathering was Mr. Kwaku Owusu Peprah (KOP), Channel Manager of Joy News. He stressed the importance of building credibility through ethical practice, discipline, and resilience. He reminded students that journalism requires sharp intellect and consistent effort, urging them to read widely, stay curious, and hold firm to the principles of truth and accuracy.
“Integrity is the currency of our profession,” KOP said. “Every report you file, every appearance you make builds or breaks your trust with the audience.”
Adding an academic perspective to the discussion, the Dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies, Prof. Etse Sikanku, underscored the value of journalism to society and the personal fulfillment it brings.
“Journalism is the most valuable thing you can do with your life,” he said. “If you are passionate about it, stay true to your call.”
Prof. Sikanku explained that the consultative meeting was part of the faculty’s efforts to deepen the link between academia and industry, ensuring that students gain practical insight and mentorship from top media professionals. He urged students to reject outdated notions that undermine the profession’s relevance.
“You have a responsibility to change the myth about journalism,” he added. “It is not a second-choice field. It is a powerful force for development and truth.”

The event was rich with insight and motivation, marked by a highly interactive atmosphere as students listened with rapt attention and responded with visible enthusiasm throughout the presentations. Many expressed deep appreciation for the speakers’ honesty, practical wisdom, and powerful reflections. The meeting ended on a high note, leaving students inspired and better informed about the realities, demands, and vast possibilities within the journalism profession. Several participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to interact directly with professionals who have walked the path they are preparing for.

The Student-Staff Consultative Meeting is part of FOJAMS’ broader mission to produce well-rounded, ethical, and industry-ready graduates. It reaffirmed UniMAC-IJ’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of media professionals equipped with both academic excellence and practical wisdom.

*Ghana Immigration Service Cracks Down on Street Begging by Undocumented Immigrants*

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has intensified efforts to curb illegal immigration, conducting a major operation on Friday, May 16, 2025, to remove undocumented immigrants from the streets of Accra. The exercise, which focused on the Kaneshie-Abossey Okai stretch, resulted in several immigrants being escorted to the Immigration Service Headquarters for processing.

According to GIS officials, the operation was prompted by growing concerns from the public regarding the rising number of immigrants engaging in street begging. Many affected individuals reportedly cited hunger and economic hardship in their home countries as their primary reason for migrating to Ghana.

A statement from the Immigration Service emphasized the government's commitment to maintaining order and enforcing immigration laws. Officials assured that due process would be followed in handling the detained immigrants, with assessments being conducted to determine appropriate actions in accordance with national regulations.

Some Ghanaians have welcomed the move, expressing gratitude for the government’s intervention. Residents near the operation site described the exercise as necessary, stating that it would help reduce congestion and promote lawful migration practices.

Authorities have encouraged the public to report concerns related to illegal immigration to the appropriate offices, reiterating their resolve to uphold national security and social stability.

Crowned Artiste of the Year at 2025 Telecel Ghana Music.

The 2025 edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) lit up the Grand Arena on Saturday, May 10, as Ghana’s biggest stars gathered to celebrate excellence in the music industry. The night featured electrifying performances from top artistes including Empress Gifty, Stonebwoy, KiDi, Kweku Smoke, Fameye, and King Paluta, among others.

The prestigious event, held annually to honor Ghanaian musicians for their exceptional contributions to music and arts, recognized talent across various categories. Key awards presented included Most Popular Song, Record of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Reggae Song of the Year, and several others.

The highlight of the night was Gregory Bortey Newman, popularly known as King Promise or the Five Star General, being named Artiste of the Year for the first time in his career. The emotional win marked a significant milestone for the singer, who has been a consistent force in the Ghanaian music scene.

In his acceptance speech, King Promise expressed heartfelt gratitude to his fans, family, and team. He encouraged emerging artistes not to give up, recounting how his first nomination years ago ended without a single award. “I used that disappointment to push harder,” he said. “Let my story inspire you.”

The 2025 TGMA proved once again to be a celebration of not just talent, but resilience and growth in Ghana’s vibrant music industry.

Shares Update on Guinness World Record Attempt — What’s Next After the Sing-A-Thon?

Ghana’s beloved media figure and powerhouse personality, Afua Asantewaa, has officially shared an update on her bold attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest individual singing marathon—and though her second attempt didn’t land the title, her journey has been nothing short of inspiring.

In a statement released by Askof Productions Limited, Afua confirmed that the recent record attempt was unsuccessful. But she’s not dwelling on the result. Instead, she’s celebrating the growth, the support, and the unforgettable experience that came with it.

> “It’s been a challenging yet rewarding journey,” she wrote. “Having had the opportunity to explore my potential on the esteemed Guinness World Records platform… has led to discovery, growth, development, success, and life-altering events.”

Afua’s Sing-A-Thon, which captivated audiences far beyond Ghana’s borders, wasn’t just about singing—it became a national movement. Backed by a wide circle of supporters including Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, Nasco Electronics, Perla Natural Mineral Water, and Zoomlion, her team brought energy, pride, and purpose to the stage.

She also gave heartfelt thanks to essential service providers, media outlets, bloggers, and fans from across the globe—Africa, Europe, Asia, the U.S.—anyone who stood by her, cheered her on, or offered constructive feedback.

So, what’s next?

While the title may still be out of reach for now, Afua is far from done. “We will continue to make steady progress,” she said. That’s a promise we’re holding onto.

The Sing-A-Thon might have ended, but Afua Asantewaa’s voice—and her spirit—continue to echo across Ghana and beyond.
