US Seeks Extradition of Ghanaian Abu Trica Over $8m Romance Fraud

Ghanaian social media influencer Abu Trica, whose real name is Frederick Kumi, has been arrested in Ghana over his alleged role in a sophisticated romance scam that reportedly defrauded elderly Americans of over $8 million.

US authorities say the 31-year-old masterminded a scheme using AI-generated fake personas on social media and dating platforms to manipulate victims emotionally before extracting large sums of money.

Kumi has been charged in the United States with wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering, crimes that could attract a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

His arrest was carried out by Ghanaian security agencies in collaboration with international partners, and the US has formally initiated extradition proceedings.

Prosecutors allege that the illicit funds were distributed among accomplices operating in both Ghana and the United States.

The case is part of an ongoing US enforcement drive against West African cybercrime syndicates, particularly those targeting vulnerable elderly citizens.
