Daniel Tetteh
Nartey
Daniel Tetteh Nartey is a Ghanaian pop-surrealist artist who employs satirical representations of the heads, hands and legs, urging viewers to ponder the intricate role played by these body parts within the societal structure. Drawing from the depths of his mind, Nartey incorporates the captivating allure of the colour blue, which serves as a visual thread that weaves through his artwork. His brush strokes conjure creatures and narratives that blur the line between what is real and what is imagined, encapsulated within the realm of figurative poses.

Benefits of Frequency Separation
Precise control: Separate texture and detail from tones and colors for precise control over image manipulation.
Non-destructive editing: Make changes without altering the original image data.
Reduced artifacts: Minimize the appearance of artifacts, such as halos or edge fringing.
Step-by-Step Guide to Frequency Separation in Photoshop
1. Duplicate the Image Layer
Open your image in Photoshop and duplicate the layer by going to Layer > Duplicate Layer or using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+J (Windows) or Command+J (Mac).
2. Apply a Gaussian Blur
With the duplicated layer selected, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
Set the Radius to around 5-10 pixels, depending on the image resolution and the desired level of blur.
Click OK to apply the blur.
3. Create a New Layer for the Detail
Create a new layer by going to Layer > New > Layer or using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+N (Windows) or Command+Shift+N (Mac).
4. Apply the High Pass Filter
With the new layer selected, go to Filter > Other > High Pass.
Set the Radius to around 5-10 pixels, depending on the image resolution and the desired level of detail.
Click OK to apply the High Pass filter.
5. Set the Blending Mode
With the High Pass layer selected, set the Blending Mode to Linear Light.
Adjust the Opacity as needed to control the level of detail.
6. Refine the Edge Mask (Optional)
If necessary, refine the edge mask by painting on the mask with a soft brush.
Use the Brush Tool (B) and adjust the Flow and Opacity as needed.
Tips and Variations
Use a layer mask: Apply a layer mask to the High Pass layer to control the visibility of the detail.
Adjust the radius: Experiment with different radius values for the Gaussian Blur and High Pass filters to achieve the desired level of detail and texture.
Combine with other techniques: Use frequency separation in combination with other retouching techniques, such as dodging and burning, to achieve a more polished look.
By following these steps and experimenting with different settings, you can master the technique of frequency separation in Photoshop and take your image retouching skills to the next level.
