Obrempong Nii Kwashie Gborlor IV, Divisional Chief of Ngleshie Amanfro in the Ga South Municipality, majestically displayed the revered traditional Obonu Dance during the Homowo Festival celebrations of the Mantse Ankrah Royal Family at Kaneshie.

The Obonu Dance is more than just performance, it is a living testimony of Ga heritage, culture, and spirituality. Rooted in the royal and warrior traditions of the Ga people, the Obonu is performed with the great Obonu drum, a sacred instrument historically reserved for chiefs, warriors, and priests. Its rhythms and movements embody royal prestige, divine authority, and ancestral presence.

Historically, the Obonu was used to summon warriors, announce great communal events, and honor the gods and ancestors. It was a dance of unity, courage, and spiritual invocation—calling on the Creator (Ataa Naa Nyonmo) and the protective spirits of the forebears to bless and guide the community. Every step, every drumbeat, and every movement speaks to the power of leadership, the sacredness of tradition, and the resilience of the Ga people.

Today, the Obonu Dance remains a symbol of dignity, continuity, and cultural pride. In showcasing it during Homowo, Obrempong Nii Kwashie Gborlor IV not only celebrated the festival of harvest and victory over famine but also reaffirmed the enduring strength, spirituality, and unity of the Ga people.

Ngleshie Amanfro Divisional Stool Commences Annual Yam Festival 2025

The Ngleshie Amanfro Divisional Stool is pleased to announce the commencement of its Annual Yam Festival for the year 2025, a cherished tradition that brings together chiefs, elders, residents, and well-wishers in a celebration of culture, unity, and gratitude.

This year’s festival promises a vibrant display of Ga customs, traditional rites, and communal feasting all centered around the symbolic significance of the yam.

Historical Significance of the Yam Festival among the Ga People

The Yam Festival, also known in parts of the Ga community as Homowo Afiɔ Adekɛ, traces its roots to ancient times and is closely tied to the themes of survival, abundance, and thanksgiving.

Historically, the Ga people experienced a devastating famine during their early settlement periods. Following years of drought and food scarcity, the rains finally came, and the land yielded its first bountiful harvest — notably of yam and other staples. In celebration of overcoming the hardship and as an expression of gratitude to the gods and ancestors, the people began an annual tradition of feasting and ritual purification.

The yam, in particular, was seen as a sacred crop a symbol of life, sustenance, and divine favor. During the festival, yams are offered to the ancestors before being shared among family members, signifying peace, reconciliation, and renewal.

Through this celebration, the Ga people also reaffirm their identity, honor their lineage, and strengthen community bonds.

The 2025 Yam Festival at Ngleshie Amanfro is more than a cultural event it is a legacy passed down through generations. The Divisional Stool invites all sons and daughters of the land, as well as friends from near and far, to join in the festivities as we preserve and celebrate our proud heritage.

Long live the Ngleshie Amanfro Divisional Stool.
Long live Ga Dangme unity.
Long live our rich traditions.
