YouTube has overtaken TikTok in the short-form video race, with YouTube Shorts now hitting 200 billion daily views-up from 70 billion in March 2024, a 186% surge. CEO Neal Mohan announced the milestone at the
2025 Cannes Lions Festival, comparing it to TikTok's reported 1 billion daily views.
Part of the spike comes from YouTube's updated view-counting method, which now counts quick scrolls as views, similar to TikTok. Beyond mobile, YouTube is also dominating TV screens-users now watch over 1 billion hours daily on TVs. According to Nielsen, YouTube accounted for 12.5% of all U.S. TV viewership in May, outperforming Netflix, Disney+, and traditional broadcasters.
