Heath Goldfields Launches $20M Community Development Plan For Bogoso-Prestea

Heath Goldfields has launched a $20 million five‑year community development programme aimed at transforming lives across its operational communities in the Western Region through major investments in education, enterprise development, infrastructure, healthcare, and job creation.

The initiative was announced by Managing Director Patrick Appiah Mensah during the programme’s official launch Yesterday.

Key Projects Under The Five‑Year Plan

Education and training:

★ A nursing training college in Prestea

★ A partnership with the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) to establish a campus in Prestea

★ A technical and vocational training centre at Beppoh

★ A new Junior High School (JHS) block at Dumasi, an additional JHS block and CHPS compound at Kwame Niapa, and a new school block at Brakwaline

Healthcare:

★ A new clinic and CHPS compound at Dumasi

★ A CHPS compound at Kumsono

★ A CHPS compound and portable water facility for Akokobediabrow
Community

Infrastructure and enterprise:

★ A modern community centre in Bogoso

★ A modern market at Bondaye

★ Road network improvements at Mbease Nsuta

★ Enterprise development and job creation initiatives to support local businesses

Broader vision and Appeals

Patrick Appiah Mensah emphasized that the true value of mining is not just measured in gold ounces, but in jobs created, businesses empowered, families supported and lives transformed.

He called on the Ghanaian government to extend greater support to indigenous mining firms, similar to the assistance often provided to foreign mining companies, arguing that such backing is crucial for long‑term national development.

He also appealed to chiefs, youth and community members to protect the mine, reject activities that undermine operations or destroy infrastructure, and cooperate with the company, stressing that the success of the mine is directly tied to the success of the development programme

Nana Amoh Appeals to Roads Minister Over Delayed Bowdie–Assankragwa Road Project

The Amenfi Central Branch Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Amoh, has appealed to the Western Regional Minister and Minister for Roads and Highways to urgently intervene in the delayed Bowdie–Assankragwa road project in the Western Region.

Speaking on behalf of residents and commuters who use the stretch, Nana Amoh expressed concern over the slow pace of work by the contractor handling the project, stating that the current situation is causing severe hardship for people in the affected communities.

According to him, the contractor is currently focused on constructing gutters while work on the main road has stalled, leaving the road in a poor and difficult condition. He explained that the incomplete work has become a major challenge for residents, especially during the rainy season when the road becomes muddy and nearly inaccessible.

He noted that whenever it rains, movement within the area becomes extremely difficult.

He therefore appealed to the Roads and Highways Ministry and the Western Regional Minister to personally inspect the project and ensure that the contractor speeds up work to ease the suffering of the people.

The Bowdie–Assankragwa road remains a key route for many communities in the area, and residents believe its completion will greatly improve transportation, business activities, and daily life.

Residents are now hopeful that government authorities will respond quickly to their concerns and ensure the timely completion of the project.

GOOD NEWS FROM HEATH GOFIELDS

Management of Heath Gofeilds has officially announced that all outstanding arrears owed to former workers after taking over the mines from FGR have been fully paid.

Speaking at a press conference held yesterday, management revealed that over $22 million has been paid to workers and all individuals who were owed by the company. T@ includes salaries, SSNIT contributions, Provident Fund (PF), and all other outstanding entitlements.

The workers, who were present at the press conference, expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the management for fulfilling its promise. They confirmed that they have successfully received all monies owed to them and described the moment as a great relief and a joyful day for many families.

The workers also debunked rumours circulating that the Heath Gofeilds processing plant is not operational. According to them, the plant is fully operating under the company’s management, and mining activities are ongoing smoothly.

They therefore urged the general public and all concerned persons to disregard false information suggesting otherwise.

“Today in Bogoso, some youth in the community prevented a group of workers from heading to work at Heath Goldfields Limited.

According to the youth, their action was driven by concerns over limited employment opportunities for local residents. They claim that despite mining operations taking place in their area, only a small number of people from Bugosu have been recruited.

out of the batch scheduled for work this morning, only three individuals were from the Bogoso community. This sparked frustration among the youth, who insist that the company must provide fair employment opportunities to locals.

The group stopped the workers and demanded a meeting with management to address what they describe as unequal hiring practices.

The situation highlights growing concerns about community inclusion, local employment, and corporate responsibility in mining areas across Africa.”

🚧 Frustration Grows Over Poor State of Bogoso–Prestea Road

Residents along the Bogoso–Prestea stretch are expressing deep frustration over the continued deterioration of the road, despite several promises by government to rehabilitate it.

In a press release issued today, the community-based group New Prestea Movement warned that patience among residents is running out. According to the group, the poor condition of the Bogoso–Prestea Road is affecting transportation, business activities, and daily life for people who rely on the route.

The group has therefore issued a strong warning to government authorities, stating that if immediate steps are not taken to fix the road, they will organize a demonstration to press home their demands.

Residents say the time for promises is over and are calling for urgent action to rehabilitate the road and restore safe travel for commuters and businesses in the area.

💔 Tension Rises in Dumasi After Ekumok Pit Claims Another Life

The tragic drowning of a 37-year-old man at the abandoned Ekumok mining pit in Dumasi has sparked fresh tension in the community.

The pit, formerly operated by Future Global Resources (FGR), has reportedly claimed eight lives over the years, making it one of the most dangerous abandoned mining sites in the area.

Following the incident, police officers arrived to convey the body to the hospital for further investigations and an autopsy. However, upon reaching the community, some residents initially resisted the move.

According to the Assembly Member, who provided updates on the situation, residents expressed deep frustration, arguing that authorities have long been aware of the dangers posed by the pit but failed to act.

Community members questioned why action seems to come only after lives are lost.

The situation led to a heated verbal exchange between some residents and the police. Though tensions were high, it did not escalate into physical violence. Eventually, the police were able to take the body for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the community continues to demand urgent and concrete measures — either the covering of the pit or the draining of the water — to prevent further tragedies.

Residents insist that enough is enough.

💔 Ekumok Pit Claims Another Life – Dumasi Residents Demand Urgent Action

The abandoned Ekumok mining pit at Dumasi has claimed yet another life.

This time, the victim is a 37-year-old young man who reportedly drowned in the old pit formerly operated by Future Global Resources (FGR).

The pit, which has been left uncovered and filled with water after mining activities ceased, continues to pose a serious threat to residents. According to community members, this tragic incident brings the death toll linked to the Ekumok pit to eight lives.

Angered by the recurring tragedy, residents of Dumasi are calling on leaders within the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality to take immediate and drastic action. They are demanding that authorities either:

Properly cover and secure the pit, or

Drain the water to eliminate what they describe as a “death trap” in their community.

The community has expressed deep frustration over what they perceive as neglect. Residents warn that if urgent measures are not taken, they will stage a demonstration and resist visits by leaders who fail to provide concrete solutions.

The repeated loss of lives at the Ekumok pit raises serious concerns about abandoned mining sites and community safety.
