From time to time, we all wash our hair, add all kinds of products into it, and style it. BUT HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY WE HAVE HAIR OUR HEAD?
Most of us see hair as beauty.
But biologically, hair is protection first, beauty second.
Let’s talk about it.
🌞 1. Hair Protects Us from the Sun
Your scalp is skin.
And just like every other part of your skin, it can burn.
Your hair acts like a natural umbrella. It reduces direct exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays and helps prevent:
-Sunburn on the scalp
-Skin damage
-Long-term sun-related skin issues.
Imagine living in hot regions like Ghana without scalp hair. The sun would hit your head directly every day. Hair reduces that impact.
That’s not fashion, it is a design.
🧠2. Hair Protects the Brain Indirectly
Your brain is your control center.
Although the skull is the main protector, hair adds an extra light layer of cushioning against:
-Minor bumps
-Friction
-Environmental elements
It’s not a helmet, but it’s still part of your body’s protective system.
🌡 3. Hair Helps Regulate Temperature
Hair traps a thin layer of air close to your scalp.
That trapped air:
-Helps keep you warm in cold conditions
-Reduces excessive heat exposure in hot conditions
When you get goosebumps, tiny muscles lift your hairs slightly to trap more That's an ancient temperature-control mechanism.
We may not notice it much today, but the system is still there.
🦟 4. Hair Is a Sensory Alarm System
Each hair strand is connected to nerve endings.
When something touches your hair, your brain knows immediately.
That’s why:
You feel when an insect lands on your head
You sense movement even before something touches your skin
Hair is part of your body’s early warning system.
🛡 5. Hair Protects the Scalp Barrier
Your scalp contains:
-Hair follicles
-Oil glands
-Sweat glands
Hair helps regulate how quickly moisture evaporates from the scalp and reduces excessive dryness caused by environmental exposure.
Healthy hair supports a healthy scalp environment.
đź’ So What Does This Mean?
Hair is not just for:
Length
Style
Beauty or
Trends
It is part of your body’s protection system.
When we care for our hair, we are not just “looking good.”
