Godigbe: Migration Re-enactment (Afegame) — Remembering Our Roots

Godigbe, also known as Afegame, is a significant traditional migration re-enactment that tells the story of the journey and settlement of the Ewe people. It is a powerful reminder of the struggles, courage, unity, and determination of our ancestors as they moved from one place to another in search of safety, peace, and a better place to settle.

The Afegame re-enactment brings this history to life through traditional songs, drumming, dancing, storytelling, processions, and other cultural performances. It allows the younger generation to see and experience the journey of their ancestors rather than learning about it only from stories.

Beyond the celebration, Godigbe is a preservation of Ewe history, identity, language, traditions, and cultural heritage. It reminds us that knowing where we come from helps us understand who we are and where we are going.

As the migration story is re-enacted, we honour the sacrifices of those who came before us and celebrate the rich heritage they passed on to generations.
