Monica Amekoafia (Ghana's first Miss Ghana) was born on 30 June 1934 and died on the 24th June 1990. The late Monica Amekoafia was the winner of the first edition of the Miss Ghana contest in 1957 while representing the Trans-Volta Togoland. It was from her contestant number that people from the Volta Region are sometimes called Number 9(Nine). After shying away from participating in the competition, little Monica at age 22 found herself on stage at the Accra Community Centre on March 4, 1957, where she competed alongside representatives from the Western, Eastern, Ashanti, and Northern provinces, and won, much to the admiration of the judges. For her prize, Monica, 22 years old at the time, won a visit to London and had the opportunity to meet the Mayor. Monica's fame was evident in those days when she appeared at public places such as the popular Makola Market in Accra where market women flocked to see and hail her when she went shopping. A statue has also been erected in her honour at Hohoe around the post office square. Visit her family house at Alavanyo, Hohoe for a true account of her rise to fame. Also, make sure to visit her statue at Post office square, Hohoe to take some memorial pictures.
