PRAYING WITH YOUR UNDERSTANDING.

Exposition
As established earlier, prayer is communication between man and God in Christian circles. This communication takes various forms such as speaking in tongues, praying with words that you understand and sometimes you may want to do that through songs. Mostly, the level one gets to determine how one communicates with God, especially as Pentecostals.

Prayer is good. It is the energy house of the Christian. According to Rev James McKeown, “the work is prayer and prayer is the work”. Praying is difficult but once you give yourself to prayer, it becomes the surest way to succeed.

According to 1 Corinthians 14:15, Paul mentioned that he would pray with his spirit and his mind also. Paul praying with the mind here means praying with words that he understood. You have to pray with your understanding when thanking God and when praying for someone who is also present at the place of prayer. This would enable the second person to appreciate the content of the prayer. Inferring from verse 16 of 1 Corinthians 14, praying with understanding also helps unbelievers to understand what is being prayed for and enables them to respond accordingly.

If prayer is also to build your hearers up, then it must be said with your understanding. The words of your prayer serve as an encouragement to those who hear them, a relief to the broken hearted and a revival to the weak and weary. Paul would pray in the spirit for self-edification and would also pray with his understanding to build his audience up. These two are very important to us as Pentecostals.
One must not be done to the detriment of the other.

Prayer Guide:
Dear Lord Jesus, help me to cultivate the habit of praying with my understanding and with my spirit as well. Amen.

OFFENSES.

Exposition:
earth, has been offended in one way or the other. Sometimes we may view offense as slight or a deliberate discourteous act. Some Christians sometimes as a result of offense carry a resentment against one another for the rest of their lives.

The word “Offense” comes from the Greek word, “Skandalon”, which means a snare or trap. It also means something that makes someone stumble or fall into a scandalous act. We can clearly identify according to Proverbs 6:16-18 that the very things that the Lord hates are the things which offend us. Such things include stern looks, telling lies against one another, shedding innocent blood, devising wicked plans against one another, giving false witnesses amongst others. These are actions that are always with us as human beings but since the God we serve hates them, we must endeavour to also live far away from them.

Offenses come in two forms. The first one is that, someone may offend you knowingly or unknowing. The second one is that your actions may offend someone also knowingly or unknowingly. It is either someone offends you or you offend someone. Interestingly, Christians often times fail to see the second one. We are always right in our own eyes such that when even we offend others, we are not able to realize but quickly get offended by opposite actions.

We should be discerning enough to identify when our actions offend others and be able to seek for reconciliation. In your sober reflections, consider some of these things as mentioned in Proverbs 6:16-18 and pray God guards you against them, that even if people would be offended through you, the consistency may be minimized.

Prayer Guide:
Pray that God helps you identify the very things that breed offenses and prevents you from causing others to be offended.

DEPRESSION .

Exposition:
Depression is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as a medical condition in which a person feels very sad and anxious and often has physical symptoms such as being unable to sleep, etc. Many people experience depression at some point in their lifetime. It is most common among the youth compared with other age groups. It may be precipitated among the youth with obesity and peer problems which affect self-esteem, extended bullying, the birth of a new baby, and academic issues.
The persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest that characterises major depression can lead to a range of behavioural and physical symptoms. These may include changes in sleep, appetite, energy level, concentration, daily behaviour, or self-esteem. Depression can also be associated with thoughts of su***de. The condition can affect one’s ability to behave normally, hence the need to increase screening of mental disorders among people for prompt medical intervention. The depressed individual may experience guilt, loss of interest in activities, irritability, social isolation, excessive sleeping/unable to sleep, excessive eating/loss of appetite, and weight gain/weight loss.
Biblical text provides inspiration in dealing with depression apart from medical therapy and regular exercises among others. God assures us in Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not, for l am with you; be not dismayed, for l am your God; l will strengthen you, l will uphold you with my righteous right hand “. This verse reminds one that God is with you and not to be afraid, for He will grant you strength to overcome the storms of life. “l can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13) is a biblical antidote to the loss of interest and feeling of impossibility in accomplishing a simple task. It gives assurance of the abiding presence of Christ with us and through whom we are able to triumph even in dark moments.

Dear Lord, help me to trust you and acknowledge your sovereignty all the days of my life.
