Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has joined the nation in mourning following the devastating military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. The incident, widely described as one of the most tragic in Ghana’s recent history, claimed the lives of eight individuals, including three senior government officials and several members of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The deceased include Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation; and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator. All three were en route to Obuasi on official duty when the Ghana Armed Forces helicopter they were travelling in crashed under yet-to-be-determined circumstances.

In a public statement posted to his official social media page and broadcast by EASTERN FM 105.1 MHz, former President Akufo-Addo described the crash as a "national tragedy", stating that the incident had left him and the entire country "profoundly shocked and saddened." He emphasized that the loss of such distinguished public servants and dedicated military personnel represents a deeply painful moment for Ghana.

“I have spoken and extended my deepest condolences to the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, and to Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC),” the former President noted.

Akufo-Addo further extended his sympathies to the Ghana Air Force, acknowledging the exceptional service and unwavering commitment of the fallen military officers who were onboard the ill-fated aircraft.

“I console with our gallant men of the Ghana Air Force at this concerning time and salute their indispensable role in the public life of our country,” he said.

The former President's message struck a solemn and reverent tone, highlighting the shared sense of grief and national solidarity in the wake of the disaster. He concluded with a heartfelt prayer for the souls of the departed:

“May they find peaceful rest in the Bosom of the Almighty, until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again.”

In response to the tragedy, the Government of Ghana, through the Office of the President, has declared a period of national mourning. All national flags are to be flown at half-mast across the country in honour of the deceased until further notice. The directive reflects the nation’s collective respect for the contributions of the victims and the gravity of the loss suffered.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces, in collaboration with relevant investigative authorities, has launched a full-scale investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary assessments are underway, with official updates expected in the coming days. Security analysts and aviation experts have called for thorough technical and procedural reviews to prevent future occurrences of such incidents involving state officials and military assets.

The tragic loss of Dr. Omane Boamah, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, and Alhaji Limuna Muniru has sent shockwaves throughout the political landscape, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum, civil society, religious bodies, and the international diplomatic community. Many have described the late ministers as selfless patriots who served with distinction and unwavering commitment to the progress of the nation.

The Government of the Republic of Ghana has officially declared a period of national mourning following the tragic death of two prominent cabinet ministers—Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation—along with six others who perished in a devastating military helicopter crash.

The fatal incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District in the Ashanti Region. According to preliminary information, the ministers and their accompanying personnel were traveling to Obuasi as part of a scheduled government assignment involving environmental and security inspections in the region. The helicopter, operated by the Ghana Armed Forces, went down under yet-to-be-determined circumstances, claiming the lives of all onboard.

In an official statement released to EASTERN FM 105.1 MHz, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, conveyed the deep grief and profound sorrow felt across the highest levels of government. He emphasized that the loss of such dedicated public servants, who had committed themselves to the advancement and security of the nation, was not only a tragedy for their respective families but a great national loss.

“The President of the Republic and the entire government express their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of our dearly departed colleagues and all others who lost their lives while in the service of Ghana,” the Chief of Staff stated. “As a mark of respect and national solidarity, all national flags across the country are to be flown at half-mast with immediate effect and will remain so until further notice.”

The Presidency, speaking through official government communication channels monitored by EASTERN FM 105.1 MHz, has called on all institutions—both public and private—to adhere strictly to the directive and to observe the mood of mourning throughout the country.

The Ghana Armed Forces has since taken charge of the crash site and is working closely with relevant investigative bodies to determine the cause of the accident. According to military sources, a full-scale investigation is underway, and updates will be provided to the public as credible findings emerge.

The late Dr. Omane Boamah, a trained medical doctor and seasoned politician, was widely respected for his intellect, leadership, and unwavering commitment to national service. He had only recently been appointed Minister for Defence in February 2025 and was overseeing several strategic defence and national security reforms.

Similarly, Hon. Murtala Muhammed had been leading major environmental policy initiatives focused on sustainable development, climate change mitigation, and technological innovation within the government. His death leaves a vacuum in Ghana’s environmental leadership, especially at a time when the country is grappling with growing ecological challenges.

The sudden demise of both ministers and their aides has sent shockwaves across the political landscape and among the general population. Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, civil society groups, foreign diplomats, and ordinary Ghanaians, many of whom have shared their condolences through interviews and messages aired on EASTERN FM 105.1 MHz.

As the nation prepares for official funeral arrangements, the government has promised to honour the memory of all the fallen with dignity and national gratitude. A detailed programme of commemorative activities, including a state memorial service, is expected to be announced in the coming days.

EASTERN FM 105.1 MHz will continue to provide updates and special coverage as this story develops.

During his training, he undertook an elective program at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, United States.

He later earned a Master of Science degree in Health Policy, Planning and Financing through a joint program offered by the London School of Economics (LSE) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His academic background provided a strong foundation for his future roles in public health policy and governance.

During his student years, Dr. Boamah demonstrated strong leadership qualities. He served as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and Coordinating Secretary of the Federation of Ghana Medical Students’ Associations (FGMSA).

Medical and Public Service Career
Dr. Omane Boamah contributed significantly to health and emergency services in Ghana. In 2001, he was involved in rescue efforts during the Accra Sports Stadium disaster, which claimed the lives of 126 football fans. In 2004, he volunteered with the World Health Organization (WHO) under the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), supporting vaccination efforts and public health advocacy in Ghana.

Before entering politics, he worked as a civilian medical staff member at Ghana’s Ministry of Defence, where he engaged in various aspects of military and civilian health administration.

Political Career
Deputy Ministerial Roles
In 2009, Dr. Boamah was appointed as Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology under the administration of President John Evans Atta Mills. In that role, he chaired key investigations into environmental violations involving major companies, including KOSMOS Energy and Newmont Ghana. He also led national environmental awareness campaigns, including large-scale tree-planting initiatives aimed at mitigating climate change and land degradation.

He later served as Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports from 2012 to 2013, where he focused on youth empowerment, sports development, and improving infrastructure for national teams and youth programs.

Minister for Communications and Presidential Spokesperson (2013–2017)
Dr. Boamah was appointed Minister for Communications by President John Dramani Mahama in February 2013. He also served as Presidential Spokesperson during Mahama's tenure.

As Minister, he led transformative digital initiatives in Ghana, including the development of a national cybersecurity framework, with particular emphasis on child online protection. He established the National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) and created a multi-sectoral National Committee on Child Online Protection to address emerging online threats.

Under his leadership, the Ministry also oversaw the launch and implementation of 4G LTE infrastructure under the Government’s Own Telecommunications Access (GOTA) project, aimed at providing secure communications for public sector agencies and security institutions.

Minister for Defence (2025)
In January 2025, under the newly re-elected administration of President John Mahama, Dr. Boamah was appointed Minister for Defence. He assumed office on 30 January 2025, succeeding Dominic Nitiwul.

As Defence Minister, he prioritized strengthening Ghana’s defense capabilities and enhancing cross-border security cooperation, particularly in response to escalating insecurity in the Sahel region and northern parts of West Africa. His administration sought to modernize the Ghana Armed Forces and improve surveillance systems to deter arms trafficking and insurgent threats.

Death and National Mourning
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah tragically lost his life on 6 August 2025 in a helicopter crash in the Adansi-Akrofuom area of Ghana’s Ashanti Region. The accident claimed the lives of all eight individuals aboard, including Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and several military personnel.

The aircraft, which belonged to the Ghana Armed Forces, was returning from a security inspection tour in the Northern Region when it crashed. The tragedy drew widespread national and international condolences. President Mahama ordered all national flags to fly at half-mast and described the incident as “a profound loss to the nation.”

Legacy
Dr. Omane Boamah’s career was marked by a unique blend of medical expertise, policy acumen, and dedicated public service. His contributions to health systems, environmental governance, digital transformation, and national security are widely recognized.

He was a passionate advocate for youth development, cybersecurity, and institutional reform. His leadership style combined technical knowledge with political integrity, earning him respect across party lines.

At the time of his death, he was considered one of the most promising political leaders in Ghana, with a trajectory that had already left an indelible mark on multiple sectors of public life.
