Nkawkaw Krofrom Residents Raise Alarm Over Mounting Refuse

The growing refuse crisis at Nkawkaw Krofrom is raising serious concerns, with waste reportedly spilling into surrounding areas and creating an unhealthy environment.

The situation is particularly worrying because the dump is located close to a school, potentially exposing pupils, teachers and residents to foul odours and health risks.

But beyond Nkawkaw, this raises a bigger question: What exactly are our Municipal Assemblies doing?

Sanitation is not solved by occasional clean-up exercises. Leadership means identifying persistent problems, providing systems that work, and ensuring refuse is collected and properly managed.

If refuse is engulfing our communities, then the real question is not just who is dumping it—it is who is responsible for managing it.

Authorities must act. Residents deserve better.

Kwahu Afram Plains South DCE Donates 40 Mattresses to Newly Posted Nurses

The District Chief Executive for Kwahu Afram Plains South, Hon. Moses Tangme, has donated 40 student mattresses to newly posted nurses to improve staff welfare and encourage them to remain in the district.

The District Health Director, Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Ansah, commended the gesture, noting that staff retention remains a major challenge in the district. He revealed that 36 out of the 38 nurses posted this year reported for duty and urged them to serve with dedication and professionalism.

The donation forms part of the Assembly's efforts to motivate health workers and strengthen healthcare delivery in the district.

Questions Raised After New Juaben North Municipal Assembly Fails to Conduct Government Scholarship Vetting

Questions are being raised after the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly failed to conduct the scheduled Ghana Scholarship Secretariat vetting exercise for tertiary scholarship applicants on the appointed date.

Several students who had travelled to the Assembly premises for the interview were reportedly asked to return home after officials informed them that the panel responsible for the vetting was unavailable. According to the students, they were told the Assembly had not been adequately informed about the exercise and that members of the interview panel had other official engagements.

The development has left many applicants frustrated, especially as similar scholarship interviews were successfully conducted in other districts and municipalities across the country, including neighbouring New Juaben South, where 111 applicants were vetted under the Government's tertiary scholarship programme.

The incident has sparked concerns among affected students, who are demanding answers from the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly over why the scheduled exercise could not be held despite the nationwide timetable.

Residents and applicants are calling on the Assembly and the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat to explain what led to the postponement and to announce a new date as soon as possible to ensure that no eligible student is unfairly disadvantaged.

KTU SRC Presidential Aspirant Petitions Rent Control Over Hostel Fee Hikes

KTU SRC presidential aspirant, Francis Kweku Ansah, says he has formally petitioned the Rent Control Department over what he describes as the rising cost of hostel accommodation for students in Koforidua.

According to him, some private hostel operators increased accommodation fees during the last academic year, explaining that the additional charges would be used to undertake renovation works. However, he alleged that when students returned from vacation, no renovations had been carried out, raising concerns over the justification for the fee increments.

Speaking on Taste 90.9 FM, Mr. Ansah disclosed that the Rent Control Commissioner has assured him of a visit to Koforidua to inspect conditions at the affected hostels.

Vehicle Fire at Suhum Presby Junction Brought Under Control by Firefighters

Firefighters from the Suhum Fire Station successfully extinguished a vehicle fire involving a Daewoo Matiz at Suhum Presby Church Junction on Monday, August 3, 2026.

The crew responded within minutes after receiving a distress call and quickly contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading.

Preliminary investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) indicate that the fire was caused by fuel leaking from the vehicle's fuel tank. The vehicle sustained partial fire damage, but no injuries or fatalities were recorded.

The GNFS has advised motorists to regularly inspect their vehicles for fuel leaks and other mechanical faults to help prevent similar incidents.
