Accra Court Sentences NPP Chairman Wontumi to 20 Years for Illegal Mining

The Accra High Court has found NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, guilty of illegal mining.

The court said he carried out mining activities at the Samreboi concession in 2024 without the required permit. Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay sentenced him to 20 years in prison with hard labour. The court also fined him after rejecting his lawyers’ request to delay the ruling.

The judgment was based on evidence that excavators were used illegally in a forest reserve. The case is part of Ghana’s efforts to fight illegal mining, also known as galamsey. Wontumi’s lawyers say they will appeal the decision, while the ruling has received mixed reactions from the public.
