Late on Saturday, TikTok ceased functioning in the United States and was removed from the Apple and Google app stores, in anticipation of a law set to take effect on Sunday that mandates the shutdown of the platform, which is used by 170 million Americans.
For years, lawmakers and U.S. officials have raised concerns about the potential national security risks posed by TikTok's connections to China. Last year, Congress took action to compel TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell its stake in the app or face being banned from the U.S. market.
