Let's think about the lives of other Local Government Committee Chair Warns
The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development, Hon.Maame Queenstar Pokuah Sawyerr, has issued a stern warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the country to desist from misusing funds meant for Persons With Disability (PWDs) under the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
Under the DACF Act, three percent (3%) of the total allocation to each District Assembly is reserved for the PWD Fund.
This quota is intended to improve the lives of people with disabilities in the areas of livelihood empowerment, education, healthcare, and capacity development.
Agona East Legislator reiterated that various reports and studies indicated that the 2023 and 2024 Audit reports on MMDCEs have revealed persistent irregularities in the management of these funds, from diversions to outright misuse by some assemblies.
The Chairperson made the observation when the Committee was considering the annual statements of MMDCES in the middle sector in the Northern, North East, and some selected assemblies in the Eastern Region, who could not make an appearance before the Committee during their time in Parliament on Thursday, 9th October 2025.
“Actions will be taken against those assemblies who dipped their hands into the PWD funds she stressed.
However, the Committee commended the following MMDCEs for their distinguished leadership style and in the discharge of their duties in line with the Committee's mandate and the vision of the President.
They were the DCE of Nanumba South, Hon Musah Abdul-Rashid, DCE of Tatale Sanguli, Hon. Mary Tagb a, MCE Tamale Metro, Alhaji Abu Takoro, DCE Kumbung, Hon.Imoro Yakubu Kakpa, MCE of Savelugu, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini, DCE of Zabzugu, Hon. Goarge L.Tanei
Others were the DCE of Achiase District in the Eastern Region, Hon.Samuel Owusu Brako, and Hon.Joseph Ali Lachir of Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri in the North-East Region.
The Committee is expected to continue its public sitting with assemblies from the Savanna, Upper West, and East Regions today, Friday, 10th October 2025.
