On Tuesday, 4th July 2023, the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo commissioned the renovated and modernized Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, a year after he cut the sod for the commencement of work on the project.

The Park, which was built in 1991 and opened to the public in 1992, in the time of the 1st President of the 4th Republic, His Excellency the late Jerry John Rawlings, had not seen any renovation since then, resulting in significant deterioration of the edifice. It is for this reason that I instructed the brilliant Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, to close it down temporarily for renovation to be undertaken.

It is gratifying to note that the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has not only been renovated but has also been completely modernized to befit the status of the final resting place of the man who led Ghana to independence in 1957 and became Ghana’s first President, the justly-celebrated Kwame Nkrumah.

The Park now has facilities including a presidential library, receptive facility, mini-amphitheater, restaurant, freedom wall, and a digitalized payment and access system. The mausoleum has also been fully refurbished, with the tombstone upgraded, and the museum expanded with an audiovisual tunnel.

There is also an upgraded VVIP lounge, an expanded recreational area, a modernized gift shop, and a fountain area with synchronized audiovisuals, the first of its kind in West Africa.

The thirty million cedis (GH¢30million) modernized Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is in line with plans by the Government to make the Park one of the best tourism and heritage attractions in West Africa. As the outstanding pan-Africanist of his generation, the burial site of Dr. Nkrumah must be appropriate to his status and exceptional contribution to the liberation of Africa from colonialism and imperialism.

Day Light Robbery In Accra as Policeman Shot, Money Taken Away.

According to an eyewitness, armed robbers traveling in a black vehicle launched an attack on a bullion van shortly after it was parked at the Star Oil Fuel Station near the ECG office in Ablekuma Fanmilk.

The robbers targeted the police officers inside the van and shot them twice, injuring them in the shoulder and abdomen. Approximately 15 gunshots were exchanged between the robbers and the on-duty police officers at the fuel station.

Unfortunately, the robbers managed to escape with the stolen money. What puzzles everyone is that the incident occurred during a period when all the cameras were offline for maintenance.

As of now, the whereabouts of the bullion van driverremains unknown. However, the injured officer has been taken to the hospital and the police arrived at the scene

For Immediate Release

Let there be peace

As members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) prepare to go to the polls to elect a flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, we at Ghana Universities Journal would like to caution all members to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly.

The NDC is a powerhouse of Ghanaian democracy and as such, we urge all members to lead by example and ensure that the elections are incident-free, free, and fair. We believe that a peaceful and transparent election process is crucial to the success of the party and the overall stability of the country.

We would like to remind the Ghanaian youth that they should not involve themselves in any form of violence or ballot picking during the congress. This is not only illegal and against the spirit of democracy, but it also puts their lives at risk. We urge all young people to stay away from any form of violence and to use their voices and votes to make their preferences known.

We would like to wish all NDC members the best of luck in the upcoming elections. Your time is limited, so let us all work together to ensure that the NDC continues to be a shining example of Ghanaian democracy.

Choose a career that will put food on the table - Daniel Fenyi

Mr. Daniel Fenyi, an Educationist and a certified counselor, recently shared some valuable advice with Ghana Universities Journal regarding career paths.

During a two-hour visual discussion organized by Ghana Universities Journal on the theme” Relationships and careers, Mr. Fenyi encouraged young people to be cautious and thoughtful about their career choices.

One of Mr. Fenyi's key points was that young people must engage with their families, spouses, or partners before choosing a specific career path.

He specifically cited careers in politics, noting that such a career path can be risky and require extensive consideration beforehand.

He also cautioned against choosing a career based solely on passion, suggesting that young people should prioritize choosing a career path that will offer them financial security and stability.

Mr. Fenyi also emphasized the importance of building networks and utilizing social media to commercialize skills and gain exposure. He stressed that computer skills have become an essential basic need, and encouraged young people to acquire these skills early on in their career planning.

Finally, he emphasized the benefits of volunteering as a way to gain experience and build a network of contacts within one's field of interest.

In conclusion, Mr. Daniel Fenyi's advice contained many useful insights for young people thinking about their career paths. By emphasizing the importance of careful consideration, financial security, and networking, Mr. Fenyi provided key guidance for those seeking to build long-term success and stability in their chosen careers.

"Who Will Speak for the Voiceless? The Plight of Journalists in Ghana"

In recent years, the media industry in Ghana has been plagued by low salaries, poor working conditions, and even violence against journalists. Despite their critical role in shaping public opinion and holding those in power accountable, journalists in Ghana are often left to fend for themselves.

While some journalists have managed to rise to the top and enjoy the perks of the profession, the vast majority struggle to make ends meet. Many are not paid at all, and those who do receive a salary earn a meager average of just 3.90 cedis. This puts them at a severe disadvantage, as they are unable to support themselves or their families, let alone pursue investigative journalism that requires extensive resources.

Moreover, journalists in Ghana face a hostile work environment. They are often subjected to verbal abuse and harsh treatment from their employers, who fail to recognize their basic humanity and dignity. This can take a toll on their mental health and well-being, making it even harder for them to do their jobs effectively.

To make matters worse, journalists in Ghana are not adequately protected by the government. When they are attacked or threatened, there is often no recourse for justice. This leaves them vulnerable to further harm and discourages them from pursuing important stories that could expose corruption and wrongdoing.

It is time for the government to take action to address these issues. They can start by implementing policies that ensure fair wages and working conditions for journalists. They can also provide training and resources to help journalists improve their skills and pursue investigative reporting. Additionally, they can create mechanisms to protect journalists from violence and harassment, such as establishing an independent body to investigate attacks against journalists and hold perpetrators accountable.

Journalists are the backbone of any democracy, and their work is critical to the functioning of Ghana's society. It is time for the government to recognize this and take steps to ensure that journalists can do their jobs safely and effectively. Only then can we truly say that we have a free and fair press in Ghana?
